Well you guys were such a great help with my Winchester questions. I am already trying to figure out another weekend I can sneak away and go to Sand Lake area. Never have been there and don't know where to stay, whats around the area etc..

I'd like to be able to camp close to the dune access. Do all of the campgrounds have dune access? Just any general info would be great.

I've heard mixed comments about how the riding is there. Some say it's too small and not worth the time but I live so far from Winchester that it's hard to go there multiple times a year. I believe I can make it to Tillamook in less than 3 hours. To me that is nothing, I'd make that trip multiple trips a year. If you guys have videos or pics from Sand Lake, can you post them up.

Thanks again everyone. If anyone wants to meet up down there, let me know when you are going and I'll try and make my way there.

Several friends from Washington and the Portland area will drive the 2 extra hours...
will only take you 2 to 4 hours to be tired of it..or see everything there is..NO hills a few rolling mounds.. but you do have the beach and the shoe tree
..the only reason to go to sandlake is if you have SEVERAL friends that are going and you just want to sit around the campfire...

Really? Well my cousins girlfriend wouldn't even go up the small dune/hill to sit at the bottom of Banshee hill. She won't take advice and is afraid to ride. So we were thinking about going there so she could get some more sand time. It was boring waiting for her to find a easy route up the dune.

Is there any trails or anything like that there? Can you get up to speed there or is it just cruisin speeds? I was hitting 70 down on the flats.

It's just so much farther to drive to go all the way to Winchester. Is there anything else somewhat close? I've heard Moses Lake area is boring also.

For someone to learn to ride it would be fine...nothing challenging...the only issue is if you do go make sure you go on an off weekend, to many people in a small area and you have lots of stupid people in a small area...on busy weekends...

my whole group loves sandlake for the fact that it is alot closer to us, there is the bowl, tree shots,(alot for quads, few for sxs's), beach riding, sand camping, parking lot camping or campground camping all are ride in ride out to sand. bathroom facilities in parking lots, and campgrounds. 12-15min drive to tillamook for stuff, or sandlake store has some parts and fuel which is 5min from sand. if sometime towards end of june or on you are going let me know and i can get a group together. july on is best since we are doing big winchester trip june 1st-4th. oh and Rubicon, my buddy up here noticed you run doonz on your rzr, hes got a pair of rear STU blasters comp cut he wants to get rid of for doonz if you think your boosted beast needs more paddle.

Most three day weekends require a permit. ? $10 per vehicle, should get in advance (fills up).

I have not verified this myself, but I have been told by multiple people that this is no longer the case. I think after the alcohol ban, a lot of people stopped going to SL. Less people means no permit needed on holiday weekends anymore.

Just to reitterate what everyone else has been saying, SL is small, flat, and boring! Once, I spent more time driving there and back than I did riding there. That being said, I still go there occassionally. But it is more to take the kids to the beach than it is to go riding.

Ooooh, ok. Well that makes sense. I like to have a couple beers back at camp. Can your RZR go through everything there? I found some youtube videos of the area and they were on trails. Are they wide enough for these?

Whenever I'm out riding I have a good time. When I was down at Winchester my fiance got out cause she was afraid of some of the big dunes. Would be nice to be able to cruise around, ride on the beach and just relax. Down there is a blast but I'm always not looking forward to the ride home.

Well I guess I should have quantified my statement about it being small.

Yes, you can ride from 6AM to 12AM, nonstop, should you desire. BUT, after the first couple of hours (or less), you WILL be riding the same areas over and over again.

There is trail riding, but it is limited. There is a one way trail system that use to be clearly marked and aptly named "One-Way". It is not clearly marked anymore, but you are expected to know if you are on it or not and make sure you are going the correct direction (more or less South to North).

I personally would not take my RZR into any of the tree shots. I saw a 50" RZR down in one. It took them probably an hour to get it out because the trail narrowed up so much around a tree, that there was not enough room to keep all 4 tires on the trail. When they did finally get it out, it was less 2 fenders, broken plastic, and bent cage.

I get bored after about 3 hours there. There just isn't enough area to ride. It use to be crazy busy and an accident waiting to happen. A lot of people + limited space = unsafe. Though, I hasn't been too bad the last couple of times I have been down there, however. Again, I think the alcohol ban on the sand has a lot to do with this. Fuel price could be a factor as well.

Again, all that being said. I still go there occasionally. You can have a good time there. If it were me, I just would expect the worst and it will be a bonus if it is better than you imagined.
