So...i have a S but i am tinking of selling and buying a V6 Long Travel Rail. I know a lot of you have rails or sold yours..so..I was wondering why get a RZR over a Rail for strictly sand. With a Turbo on a S they are darn near the same price.

If i was only going to ride in the sand I would sell my rzr for a rail. However if you are like me and do different types of riding the rzr is more versatile.

I totally get that and that is kind of what i was thinking, but it seems anytime we go dirt riding we end up taking the jeeps...so now I am wondering why i am spending 5-7k to make my rzr fast in the sand. Rails are really cheap right now and you can get a lot of rail for 20k.

Honestly I ride sand rail couple time, but never really enjoy them, not to much fun. But RZR on other token is a fun to ride and have, at least for me. But money wise sand rail probably will be a cheaper then my RZR.:ride:

1. You can put a RZR in the back of a truck
2. You can put a RZR in just about ANY toy hauler
3. You can go to Moab with a RZR
4. You can get a conventional loan for a RZR
5. You can let you friends and neighbors drive your RZR with no worries.
6. You wife will be comfortable in the RZR driving (most I know are not in a Sand Car)
7. A RZR is far more reliable than any Sand Car I have been around

Unlike everyone else responding, I feel my little 2 seat (little to no travel) VW sandrail is more stable and fun in the sand. I guess it would be different if my RZR had some motor work. The RZR is great at everything else. Now we take the RZR only to the sand cause there is no room for both. Plus everybody we ride with has SXS's. Long story short, the rail is for sale.

ceo, You need to increase you riding variety. One could never ride a rail anywhere but sand dunes. Don't you have any trails or other options to ride other than sand? Nothing wrong with sand, but I can tell you there are tremendous options out there for the RZR. Trailer the machine up and take a ride somewhere.

Been doing Glamis for about 20 years.. The sand rails in our group are constantly breaking something and long nights spent working on them to get them ready for the next day. Numerous times calling "home" to have someone haul out a transmission or a clutch or an axle or steering box... I love them but the RZR fits in my 5th wheel garage and I can take it out of my driveway at home and trail ride it... Nothing against sand rails they are just not for me at this time..

after 2 rails, a tatum and an AG, it got to the point of being scared over every jump, or every little noise, that something was going to break. the biggest deal was i was the only one with a car, all the rest of my group had quads and bikes, so i was duning by myself or carrying a group of kids around. love the power and suspension, but missed hill climbs and trails!

We do have a ton of trails around sacramento..the rzr is a blast on dirt..i agree..
I guess my problem is that if I want to go on the trails I could always take my jeep, though not as fun.
My girl loves the sand and we take a few week long trips to Glamis and dumont and that is where i think the rail would be more fun. I like the rzr in sand but its not going to hang with rails. we will see...

Jeep on trails is lame. Keep the RZR, sell the Jeep and get a rail. Now that I own one, I can't imagine not having an RZR.

Those week long trips to the dunes sound like a blast. Jealous....

Good thread. I've been thinking about this as well. Seems like there is going to be quite a few more leaving their buggies for a RZR (or similar) toy.

I took my RZR on the other side of Sand Mt., NV and had a ball last trip. I am sure I will do it again.

We had a great trip to Cisco Grove (can't do it with a rail).

I used to own a rail (Tom Pro Turbo Hayabusa) and have no desire to own another. I may not get around the hill as fast but, I can still get pretty much everwhere it can. I can still see it and follow it around. (or so I think since I havn't tried.)

KBR said it well.
Add - Your buddies without a lotof money can get one too.
And - There is a better chance your bud gets one to be like you.

I just had to get in on this post! I have had both, still have the sand rail, since I purchased the RZR back in 07 I can't remember driving the sand rail since, Ohh by the way if anyone wants a 300+Whp sand rail let me know it's for sale. Anyway the RZR is way more fun, you can take it anywhere, it can climb the side of a mountain or go and play dirt2 on the mountain roads or go to the sand drags, with the 902 and the new 950 paired up with a K&T turbo, it's mostly your setup but , I have raced a few sand rails as in the Sabaru we raced at Glamis Friday night, it was close but we pulled it off! weight to horsepower, anyway my vote goes to the RZR :redrzr:

I believe Jeeps can rock crawl, Rails can go fast, RZR's can do both pretty well. The RZR is a jack of both trades, but master of neither.

Also, to the original poster, I say define 'rail.' There's nice $5k rails that are somewhat simple, fun, and cheap tp maintain, then there's the $100k V8 sand cars/offroad cars/dualsport cars (now cost $30k used).....so all I'm sayin; is that's quite a spread.......can you narrow down what you're considering in regards to rails?

Compared to a rail (cheap or expensive), the RZR is way more user friendly and less of a hassle to go use.

You will put waaay more hours on your RZR within 2 years than you will a rail. A rail is a pain to store, transport, and then operate.......so the hours just don't rack up like they will on a RZR. This was at least how it was in my case.
