Put a new custom cage on rhe 800 s today.. We took it to west point and my wife said it wouldnt run. I went back and temp gauge was up on 246-258!
It would cut out and if it didnt cool, would shut down.
I am not sure if the fan is supposed to run with key on.
My 900 will run the fan with key on, motor off. But the 800 will not not, even with the high temp. Not sure where to start!!
I had the bed off and pesure washed the engine , there was alot of grass and weeds, mud stuck around the motor, and around the water lines.
I wonder if I got water in a plug.
Or maybe unplugged something.

What year of RZR? If its a 2011 then it could be the circuit breaker which is mounted in a retarded position below the battery and resting against the skid plate. Not sure if the 12
and 13 rzr's have this too but it was a common problem, which will prevent he fan from turning on.

Thank you. I just got chance to get back here. I will check. Its a 2012 orange madness. May be what happened. I loaded it up on the side of trailer and the ramps fell. I will keep you posted if i get a day off!

well that was hard to find. took it out and cleaned everything. Fan is working. It dont come on till the temp is above 200 somewhere. Is there a way to change that to a lower temp. My wife had one more episode of over heating last Saturday. I took over and she drove my 900. If you dont just idle around its fine. If you idle it alot, it boils some of the water out. Anyone else see this?

Fan should come on somewhere close to 200. Is it actually overheating or are you possibly adding too much and its just getting rid of the extra coolant that it doesn't need when the coolant expands into the reservoir?

It is getting so hot it shuts off. And i had to add a half gallon of water the other day.
Seems as if your water pump seal might be gone but ultimately your fan isn't turning on or you have an airlock in the system. Your circuit breaker might be coming loose or is cooked and the fan is not turning on and then it will turn on when the circuit breaker is getting a connection. I have seen my machine up to temps that high since the rad has been plugged too. It will read that high of temp when its shutoff but when you turn it on the temp drops off right away.

To properly bleed the coolant system....

Raise the front of the RZR and set each front wheel on an 8" concrete block...for SAFETY.

When the motor is cool...remove the radiator cap and top off the radiator with the Polaris anti-freeze pre-mix.

Let it set for 15 minutes or so, then come back and shake the machine from the front frame. You'll probably see bubbles come up. Top off again.

Repeat this let it set, shake it, top it off for the better part of a day. Take the concrete blocks out from under the front tires. Check the coolant level and top off one last time.

Then fill the overflow bottle to the cold level.

Go ride.

I've found that after the first three rides I have to add a bit to the overflow bottle.

But...all the air is out of the system, it runs cooler and the fan cycles as it should.

You can also get a fan over ride switch that will allow you to turn the fan on when you want. It will still cycle per the coolant temp sensor, but you'll have the ability to turn it on to cool down when taking a break or getting back to camp.

This is how I've started prepping my coolant system and things work great!!

Thanks for sharing. I'm gonna change my coolant and add some redline water wetter which apparently makes your coolant run up to 30 Fahrenheit cooler. If it runs even 15 Fahrenheit cooler I will be happy.

Keep in mind that the later RZRs run hotter than the early models.

I have heard that you shouldn't change to the older thermostat as that messes with the ECU operation...but have no facts to support that.

Along with the fan overide switch I have a Dakota Digital coolant temperature gauge.

The overide switch has a light in it that indicates when the fan is on.

I've noted that that fan comes no at 198 degrees F and shuts off at 187 degrees F. This repeats all the time once the engine is warm. I have seen the temp get to 200 degrees when I have my foot it and the fan isn't on...then the fan comes on and down goes the temp back to normal cycling.

Switching coolants is probably OK, but I'd be looking for the root cause...there has to be one.

Perhaps when you drain the coolant, disconnect the rubber hoses back towards the motor, remove the thermostat and housing, and flush the system real well. Boy what a mess...do it outside.

Flush the radiator too and look for any leaks. Make sure the radiator is not plugged. Remember, don't use a pressure washer...you'll just fold all the aluminum fins over and make things worse.

Flush the metal section of the coolant lines and make sure they aren't plugged or perhaps crushed restricting flow.

To reach the temperatures that you've seen...there's something restricting flow or there ain't enough coolant.

In my case atleast, Im just trying to keep my temps down since I'm a mudder and I get the rad full of mud. I have my super soaker I keep with me on the trail to spray the rad and it does help but I figure adding a substance to the rad fluid that also helps can't hurt either.

You have a good point there...ummmm...that's why I stay out of the mud...as much as I can.

Plus, if Better Half is along, an I do get into some mud..then she gets it on her...and I get a good beating from the right seat...LOL!!!

If you have a winch on your RZR, and a nearby stout tree with an over-hanging limb, you can also winch the front of your RZR up to about a 45º angle, take your radiator-cap off, start your RZR and then let it idle for a few minutes. This will allow the coolant-system to "burp" itself. When the air-bubbles stop showing-up at the radiator-cap opening, shut-off the engine, top-up the radiator with fresh coolant and add some to the overflow-tank as needed. Now, lower the machine back down and you're good-to-go. My two bits.........

thanks guys. It may be airlocked. I will try this. I am looking for a coolant I can use too. the polaris is fine but all I have seen is small bottles of the stuff. Dont it come in gallons??
Some really good ideas. Cars have a bleeder to get the air out. I have been looking for one on the 2012 S . I guess I can use one of the methods above and try my luck.

Give our methods a try an they will work. Once the system is free of air, it won't happen again until you drain coolant and get air back in the system.

still working too much to get the air out, but I think its airlocked. I have the fan kicking in at a different temp than it should. I may drain the water out and start again one this week. I had to pour tap water in it. So I gotta get some antifreeze. I will keep you guys posted though!
