Replacement Gas Struts for Polaris Flip-Up Windshield

I have a 2012 570 with the Polaris brand Flip-up windshield. Recently while I was trailering it, one of the gas struts vibrated loose and fell off - not really sure how that happened or where it went, but I had to find a replacement.

I took a chance and bought a pair of these off Amazon:

They were $11.85 each, shipped with Prime.

They are the same thread pattern (M8 1.25) and mounted right into the existing hardware. The studs were 1/8" longer than the original, but I put a lockwasher on them. They are maybe 1/4" longer than the originals, but compress just fine. They work at about about 2x the force of the originals also, so the window pops open very quickly and stays open very well - it doesn't shake or vibrate like the originals. It is a bit harder to close from the fully open position, I have to help it get started from the edges.

In all, I think these work better than the original parts. I spent hours trying to find the right part, so I thought I would share in case someone was looking for a replacement set of these.

Good tip. I let a buddy know who has one. Thanks.
Can u pull it down with just the handle to close it?

You probably could, but because you don't sit right in front of the handle, the window bends a little more than I would like.

With the right hand on the handle, I reach up and help the drivers side strut get started closing, then it goes down fine. These struts are definitely stronger than the OEM though - If you let go of the handle, it will pop right back up.

I often put the window up on windy trails, and then down on the faster stuff. I like the way they hold the window firmly in the up position. I wouldn't want them to be any stronger, but still I do like them better than the OEM.
I need some for mine but i would like to be able to close it with just the handle and not have any problems. Ive been looking for a while just didnt know what pound pressure to get.

You can check with the dealer and maybe find the OEM part. If you do, please post it here. You can get the entire hardware kit on ebay for $110 to $140, just search for Polaris part #2878717.

Mine are the right size and thread, so maybe you can carry the ball find some lighter ones with using the size specs from the Amazon page. I would probably shoot for a 10lb lift force, as mine claim to be 17.6lbs. I spent hours searching and didn't find the perfect replacement, but I wasn't sure what I was looking for and ultimately took a gamble.

Specs from Amazon for future reference:
Force : 8kg / 17.6lb;
Stroke : 88mm / 3.46";
Stroke Rod Diameter : 6mm / 0.236"
Tube Diameter : 15mm / 0.59";
Thread Diameter : 8mm / 0.315"
Length ( screw center to screw center) : 250mm/ 9.8";
Total Length : 265mm / 10.4"

I hope that helps. Let me know if you find something better.

GCFD112 - I did another search for you, and these are similar but with only a 11lb force rating:

http://www.amazon.com/Force-Threaded-Studs-Strut-Spring/dp/B007PP34JW/ref=sr_1_12?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1435123636&sr=1-12&keywords=Ball+Studs+Lift+Strut+Gas+Spring+10.4%22

$13 each with free shipping, and they look like they would fit... Might be worth a try!

Appreciate that. Dealer has them but they are $38 per strut.
Hand Auto part

Anyone know where I can buy this clamp? The strut won't unscrew from the clamp. Passenger side came out fine but drivers side won't and that's the one needing replaced.

Yes, I believe that the clamps are included in the replacement hardware kit, polaris part # 2878717. You can purchase from one of the forum vendors that sell OEM parts (check the vendor section for discount codes), or from Amazon or Ebay. Here are a couple of current listings on Ebay:

Full Kit, $150

Here is a partial kit, missing pieces but it looks like the clamps are there for $80

I'd hate to spend $100 when all I need is one of the clamps. Especially when I only pis $100 for the whole windshield.
