Just got into the sxs world from the atv world, I just purchased a 2016 900s eps I've heard that it should be relocated. Is it a good ideal ? And should i just get the wire extension or get the up graded voltage regulator and wire extension kit. Thks in advance.

If you ride in desert and dry areas I wouldn't worry about it. I'm in Utah and haven't bothered.

If you're running an extension, be cautious of wire gauge and connectors. There can be problems with extension harnesses (especially at the connectors).

Another option is to install a guard to cover and protect the voltage regulator in it's stock location. Thunderhawk built the original voltage regulator guard, and it is designed to also protect the main wiring harness that hangs down below the drivers seat (just in front of the voltage regulator). Here's a link to the Thunderhawk Performance wesite with more details and photos of the Thunderhawk Voltage Regulator Guard

They make a relocation kit that will put it up under the front hood area. There is plenty of wire and I just remounted mine as high as I could up on the back of the passenger seat. This way it's out of any water and gets better cooling. What will destroy a Reg/Rec is internal or external heat and if for some reason water gets past the seals. I have to deal with heat on Rotax engines so I have people relocate into areas with fresh air movement. Problem solved. The other thing that causes too much internal heat is too little draw (not our problem) or too much draw (many peoples problem). Too many add ons and failure to calculate amperage draw. This causes overheating and failure.

We're sorry that you had difficulty when installing our Voltage Regulator Guard along with an aftermarket skid plate. There are so many different aftermarket skid plates available for the RZR that it’s not possible to design a guard that will be as easy to install with each and every brand of skid plate as it is with the stock skid plate and most of the common aftermarket versions.

Over the years, we have had hundreds of customers install the Voltage Regulator Guard or Electrical System Guard with aftermarket skid plates, and we’ve assisted dozens of people with their questions about the installation. Obviously, installation will take a little more time working around an aftermarket skid plate. Typically, a few screws on an aftermarket skid plate will have to be loosened or removed to allow the skid plate to be pulled down a couple inches where the guard is being installed. Then just slip it in, install a couple clamps and reinstall the skid plate hardware. Fortunately, with the voltage regulator and wiring harness now covered and protected, there should be no need to remove the guard for access to clean these parts as was required in the past.

If anyone ever has a question about the installation of any Thunderhawk products, please feel free to call us. We’ll be glad to answer all of your questions and share some great tips and advice to make the installation easier.
