Real loose handling.

I'm new to the RZR scene. We bought a new XP1000 and when running over 35 mph the machine is just skating around like we are on hard pan. At 50-55 it acts like it's trying to swap ends and at 65 it's a suicide ride with lot's left in it. Stupid crazy loose. Ever drive a street car backwards at 30+ mph? This feels like that going forward. Under hard acceleration it feels like an intermittent broken rear axle that changes sides pulling the rear out one way, then the other. We have rode in other XP1000's that feel safe and planted at 70+ mph on the same sand.

We have tried the factory tires from 15 down to 6 psi with no change. It climbs hills fine. Just not on the flats. It doesn't matter 2wd or 4wd, wet or dry sand, I feel like we are going to die. The rear alignment looks good. We are going to trash it for sure if we can't find the answer.

It's not like I am not used to the speed. My sand drag car runs over 100 mph in 300' and our dune Jeep ran 78 mph in 300'.

Any ideas?

Check the toe. My XPT was toed out a little when I got it and it felt the same way. My steering wheel was a little crooked too so I went 1 full turn on one tie rod and it made a huge difference. If your steering wheel is straight then try a half turn on each tie rod.

It's an all motor race gas 2.5 hp per ci sbc single four Australian pro stock type engine. 15.5 compression and 1.00" lift cam at 10,200 rpm. It cost about $200 a minute to operate. Being a single seat drag car with no suspension, it's not really a practical trail rig. But running 3.09@104 makes it a killer on the track. And the wife wanted something she could drive was the biggest reason.

Two thoughts, first is to check the steering rack. My Rzr had the same issue till I replaced the rack. I'll not it still didn't fix and I found there is an addition bushing up near the steering wheel that needed replaced too.

One more thought, you may want to swap with a fellow Rzr rider for a few minutes. You may be accustom to ultra tight straight line cars and this may more normal than you think.

Did you ever get the RZR handling better?

I finally had a chance to measure the toe on mine and I actually have it toed in a little more than an 1/8"

I know the spec says it should be toed OUT a little, but mine definitely handles and tracks better with it toed IN. It is an easy 2 minute adjustment that you can change back if you don't like it. Doesn't hurt anything to try it.

Mine drives the same as original poster. I feel like im gonna die over 50+ squirrely as heck! Im toed in 1/8" and shocks set in middle. It sways side to side like crazy. Feels like the rear tires are trying to crawl up under it. So I drive slow.

Yes it has to be set at your riding weight it will change a lot from the free weight especially if your ride height is set high like most from the factory.
I would run the ride height in the front at 13.5 and the rear at 13 or even a little less but keep the nose .5 inch higher.This is measured with no passengers Do this before you set the toe. I set mine at 1/16 or 1/8 toe out

When the switch ismon, AWD only engages when the rear wheels lose traction and start to spin. When the rear wheel regain traction, the AWD disengages and free wheels again and does no pulling so I don't see how having AWD engaged or not makes again difference in handling under normal riding conditions.

Makes me wonder if AWD is funtioning. A lot of things come to mind, like the round wishy-washy stock tires. A good set of truck-type tires helped settle my car down, but then again, I could run 80 on the lake bed with the stock setup and it didn’t do anything like you describe.

However, if I were in 2wd, it would act a lot like you say. Looks like a pretty old thread. Is the OP still out there?
