quad stacking in garage?

Since the purchase of my RZR, I've run out of room for my three quads. For a space saver I'd like to put a quad up on stilts or tall table. High enough to put another quad underneath. Maybe reinforcing the rafters to hang it with a winch or come-a-long. But I don't know if it's a good idea to hang 400 lbs UNDER joists. A deer is one thing but a quad is questionable. I've tried piggybacking but the Honda leaks gas even with the tank valve shut and the Sportsman isn't the easiest to get upright. Anybody have any suggestions?

Do you have enough room to build a platform and then use your loading ramp (or buy one) to drive a quad up on the platform? I'd put a "fence" around the platform to keep you from accidentally driving off of it - or the quad from rolling off of it.

Instead of hanging it from "A" truss, lay a couple 4x4's long enough to span 3 0r 4 of them and hang the quad from it,distributing the weight on the roof system...It would also help of it hangs as close as possible to the center webbings in the truss....

I myself have a problem that similiar, Ive got three quads and a RZR in my garage. I dont feel comfortable about hanging them from the rafters, I would rather build a rack with 4X4 legs to support it. That way the weight is on the floor not the rafters. Im not sure of the particulars to your situation but with mine, If I was to pull a rafter I would structually damage the house above the garage. Dont want to take the chance myself. But I really do like your idea of the rack, I think thats what Im going to do. Thanks for the help.

Actually I have both because the house doesnt cover the whole garage. The house was designed with a two car garage originally but I had it extended to a four car, so the house only sits over half of it. But yes your right I am very skeptical about hanging anything. I do have a 9ft pontoon fishing boat (blow-up style) hanging from the ceiling but it only weighs about 80lbs. Where as the polaris predator weighs in around 500lbs. Big difference in weight. Stilts is the answer, that way it keeps the weight on the floor.

DO NOT HANG THE LOAD FROM A RAFTER/JOIST/TRUSS ETC. Whether the framing is capable of sustaining the load or not, it just doesn't make sense. If something is going to be beneath it anyway, apply the load to the floor/foundation.

That's kind of what I was getting at. I'm sure the truss' would be fine but how much weight is too much? I've come to the conclusion that truss' are made as cheap as possible and are really only made to support weight from the top (roof line). That's ideal.

I think the 4x4s would be perfect. Modification is needed. Maybe add hurricane clips also. I mean how many screeches and creeks do you hear while your standing in the rafters. Definitely strong enough.

I got the 4 post lift idea from hot rod magazines. Where they put the corvette or cobra or roadster over top of the daily driver.

I've got bad thoughts of seeing someone trying to drive the quad up and the platform falling over the direction of the quads movement. x-bracing and wedge anchors.

Imagine the speed you use to get the quad in the back of a truck. Now double the height of truck (aka platform). Now think about at that speed ducking down to miss the rafter. That's like trying to get out of the garage door before it closes and then jump to miss the obstruction sensor. :) Good times right there.

I like the wall mount one too, but in my situation, I have an L shaped 4 car garage and I store the toys in the center bay as its the smallest bay so because of that there is no wall to use there. The stand alone one would work better for me but like I said, Its pretty exspensive, alot cheaper to build my own rack from scratch. KC

I wish I could, but my kids own the quads. I sold mine when I got my RZR. And because I mainly ride with my kids and they dont have a storage place for theirs I support them, So Dad still has a problem, though its self inflicted its still there.

When we are out as a family my wife drives the RZR with the 4 year old as copilot. I ride my 450R. And our 13 yr old rides the 250. My Sportsman 800 is for sale but no bites. That would free up some room but that still leaves me with 2 quads and the RZR.

I actually kind of like the idea of raising all the other clutter like push mower and pressure washer. The wall mounted rack puts a light bulb over my head also.

On the drive home tonight I got to thinking about if you were to hang a quad from the rafters, how would you hold the quad. By the grab bars, or park it on a platform and raise it from the 4 corners? What do you think?

great idea but...
My sister in law and her husband with their 4 boys stay in my 37' 5th wheel when they visit. Kinda like a guest house. It's only in my dreams that I don't have to unload my toys after a camping trip. :(

How did they get that snowmobile wedged on there. I'm talking 'bout the picture with the sportsman underneath. It'd take some doing to get that off. Hanging off both sides. Unless the kicker disconnects. I like the workbench idea. just raise it out of the way. This platform reminds me of the rear bed in my toy hauler with the electric winch and the uni-strut track rail. It's nice. $2000 is a big price. Definitely worth it. I say this cause I'm probably gonna whine, procrastinate, and dream about having this and still never have it. Just pay the price and just hope for free shipping.

Maybe too simple but alot more cost effective. I am not one to spend money just cause "Its Cool". Now everyone needs to understand that the answer is always "what does the job that you need for the best price" only lazy people take convenience into consideration.

the first thing that come to mind for me was the picture in the 2009 Polaris Accessory Catalog where they have the 3 XP's hanging from the ceiling by their winch.

i know its not the answer you are looking for, and with that said. . .im all out of ideas.

A friend of mine had the same problem, he just bought some heavy duty shelving like they use in warehouses. He rides the quads up into the back of the truck and then lifts them from there onto the racks, but his truck has a 17" lift so thats not possible for most people, but you could always lower the rack and ride directly up onto it.
