Private party purchase, checking if not stolen and possible liens?

I'm looking at buying a RZR from a private party. Here in Nevada the state just started making you register your OHV this July 2013 and titles are optional prior to mid 2012 so most peeps don't have title and registration materials.

How do I check that A) it's legal and not a stolen and B) that there are no liens outstanding?

One possible seller has said there is a loan to payoff, figure will have to deal with the bank somehow. But this got me thinking I've seen a zillion payday / title loan places here (they're like rats!) so how would I check if there are other misc type liens outstanding?

I believe you can carfax these now. From what I understand you can carfax pretty much anything with a VIN now. I would get more insight before you pay for it though. Cheap alternative to paying for a carfax subscription is to go on craigslist and pay someone $5 to run it for you rather than the $99 subscription.

If yall have to register the RZRs you could probably take your vin number to the local police station and get them to run the vin number.. Tell them that your looking at buying it and want to make sure its not stolen.

If you go this route though be prepared to tell them where the RZR is located..

Just an Idea. We would do that here in NC for you I dont know about where you live

This is a BIG problem in non-title States. In title States MVD will show all lienholders and a title can't be transferred without a lien release. As for checking stolen...you MAY be able to get police to run it on private sale. In some States it is illegal for police to run vins for private parties.

Title loans only given if a title is presented.....that info would be with NV mvd so you should be ok on lien part.

Yea here in NC buying used can get sketchy because of the non title thing. Have to be real careful and this is part of the reason I decided to buy mine new. That and neglect by the original owner. I wish they would title them as the states surrounding me both do and I feel better buying something with a title
