Just a heads up on rzr turbo primary issue

The plastic sliders are wearing the aluminum. I have five hundred dune miles and my buddy has 800 and his primary broke over the weekend. Polaris needs to address this as there is going to be a lot of unhappy riders out there. Pull your cover and inspect where the plastic sliders ride on the aluminum.

I've got two friends with turbos and 700 miles on them and they're both in the shop getting new primaries put on right now. Took my cover off and inspected mine today and I see the same thing, the plastic sliders are loose and there's some gouges taken out of the primary where they slide. Went to my dealer and he said he's booked for two weeks so I brought it home till he can get it in. Also, there's a bunch of black dust that looks like it stays in the primary where the sliders go. My dealer told me today that it's good to blow the CVT out it sounds like each day or each weekend and then spray it with electronic cleaner.

The dunes create a heavy load on the vehicle but Polaris must know that most of the south west part of the country is going there 4-6 months of the year. I guess I'm asking the aftermarket performance vendors, is a clutch kit mandatory for dune riding?

Heads up - they will ---between 700-1000 miles the failure rate is pretty high . This is the fourth rzr I have owned . I am not bagging on Polaris however , this is a real issue and from the primaries I have seen it is almost guaranteed to happen. I started this thread to make Polaris aware so they can correct it ASAP . Not after the warranty expires . I believe Polaris moniters these threads.

It keeps the dust out. But it also impedes airflow. And the belt dust and slider dust will still be in there.

But, if you look at the pics I posted above, you can see all of the black dust crap that appears to be held in the primary by centrifugal force. At first I thought that was just the black plastic slider material. But it could be a combination of dust getting in there and then breaking down the black slider? If that's the case, then a filter would help. You'd just want to get a large one so it wouldn't slow the airflow as much?

I'm waiting for the s&b particulate filter to add for the clutch. I think thst would help belt life and keep most dust out

From what I seen on about 7 different primaries , The plastic parts do eventually break but the clutch actually cocks in there and jams which. This in turns makes the car go forward when you start it up in gear. THe car will not go into gear from park or neutral. At this point the primary has been ruined because of the metal to metal contact where the sliders are supposed to protect. I am not a clutch expert by any means but I have doe some research on this and it has convinced me to buy a second assembled primary so I do not get stranded .

Again I would buy another turbo today , I am impressed with the machine I just want Polaris to be aware of the issue and make primaries available that do not wear out at 700 miles or so. Not let Polaris put their head in the sand and deny that there is an issue.

I'm at 1100 miles.
My primary will slip on sand hwy at 60.
Other than that it works like a champ.
Keep it clean.
I get a lot of belt dust.
Pretty sure that the plastic sliders are supposed to float around loose.

Is this mainly a dune issue?? anyone having same problems that don't ride in the dunes ?? Curious I go mainly to the desert (Ocotillo Wells some small dunes and sand washes but sandy terrain also ) and mountains curios if is isolated to mainly all day dune riding ?? Anyone have 500-1000 miles not so much dunes with same problem ??

This happened to mine with 500 miles on it (got locked in gear and all the plastic rollers broke) and it actually was covered by Polaris. The new primary is starting to do it again with only 200 miles now on it,which to some degree I've heard is normal, but I have a feeling mine will be back in the shop eventually for the same problem. Time will tell...

So I just spoke with an aftermarket company in the north and they are seeing more and more turbos coming in with this problem. They say that you can expect about 500 miles or so out of the primary and then the rollers fail. This is going to be a huge issue and I hope Polaris does the right thing. One of the main reasons I bought mine was because Polaris touted this as a very heavily tested, durable clutch system. But a simple glance at the design and the use of plastic rollers/sliders has me baffled. It's apparently not an "if" it's gonna fail but a "when". $27,500 for another RZR with a garbage clutch....great.

The worst thing is any company that comes up with a solution to this will most likely be bought up or we will see the kit taken off the market shortly after release. Seems to happen with any brand. I had the same problem on my 2014, epi used to sell a rebuild kit for the rollers. But suddenly it was marked out of stock everywhere. Thankfully the parts guy at the local dealer remembered the 900 rollers were listed individually in the parts diagrams... turns out the 900 clutch has the same parts. $30 a roller is little brutal though. I haven't seen a turbo clutch, maybe it's similar.

The primary on the turbo is completely different than the 900/1000's. They are fully rebuildable.

I just bought my 4 seat turbo but haven't had it out. I hope this isn't going to be an issue otherwise I'll be going through a clutch every ride since I typically go for 500 miles at a time.
