I have been riding there for over 10 years. What are you looking for in your ride? Scenery, Hills, Mud, Open easy?? They have it all. When are you wanting to go and where are you coming from. The trails are spread out over the whole southern part of the state. Poco IR and PC all link together and offer the most in one stop.

We would be looking for a little bit of everything, except mud. We enjoy some hills, scenery of the country and open trails to just cruise around. Not looking to do anything hardcore or beat on the machines real bad.

I know we wont be able to see all the trails/area but wanted a good start and will be coming back on a few more trips to see the rest. We'll be coming from the Cincinnati, OH area

Poco has some mud not a big mud hole but muddy. I would suggest you stay near Pinnacle Creek trail. Great scenery nice trails not to extreme for a first trip. They nice thing is it connects to Indian Ridge. So if you get your feet wet at PC you can step it up a little there. Lodging is not to bad in Pineville but not a ton of choices. Best to worst. It is about 5 hours from Cinci
1.Trails Lodging, LLC.
2.Cow Shed Motel and Restaurant
There are other options like Ashland but driving from Ohio this is a better option.
If you just want to come to the closest option then Charleston is just 3.5 hours from Cinci. you could hang out at TriState if that is your thing and hit Water Ways. Small trail easy to ride in a day. Then hit Ivy Branch I am not familiar with this trail. But is a jeep trail so should be rough I would guess.

I dunno where you're coming from, but if you're coming down to see the HMT System ya gotta ride Pinnacle Creek, Indian Ridge and Pocahontas trails. They are connected. All offer up a lot of great riding and have community connectors that will allow you to explore the local towns. You'll be hard pressed to see it all. The community connectors are a great way to drive your machine right into town, gas up, feed the belly and get back in the woods.

As far as the trails; Stay away from the Red/Black if you're not into the rough stuff. Greens/Blues are usually pretty tame. Blues are more steep, nothing crazy. Blacks are ok. But can be fairly steep and semi technical in spots. Usually OK if you're part mountain goat. Nothing too crazy until you get into the Red/black

Places to stay that I have delt with in the past:

Ashland Resort - Nice place and very popular
Wild Willey's ATV Rezort (stayed they before and have reservations Sept 6-8) nice place. They have basic cabins. They're clean and the people who run it are nice as can be.

The people for the most part are pretty nice and love seeing people from all over visit the trails. Just be vigilant and keep your stuff locked up and put away. Just like any other touristy area, there are douche bags that will prey on the unsuspecting tourist. And when I say that I don't mean to scare you. Just want to make you aware.

I also like pinnacle creek and the 2 connecting trailheads if you pick those pineville is a good town for food and supplys. Rockhouse is also a good trailhead, and gilbert is a cool town if you want that trailhead and has multiple places to eat . Ashland resort was nice but i like the towns better because there is a bigger variety of places to eat. Ashland is in the middle of the woods by itself.

You cant go wrong atwhere you go to. If you can talk to a local, theres ALOT of good scenary that is off the trails that is easy riding. Very good trail systems and everything is pretty much close by, most locals are really good to deal with, there are some thats not, but most are. Enjoy your trip down and hope you decide to come back many many times.

Nice offer from Rotten-RZR, that is a great area to ride. I personally live about 30 miles from the Ivy Branch trail and really like it. Nice easy ride on the green trails. Blues are a little steeper, some ruts, tight wooded area that was a little muddy this weekend but not like "get stuck" muddy or anything. Some of the blacks are interesting and fun - skid plates are needed and you may have some 2+ foot rock faces to climb going up hill and really loose rocky trails where wheel placement is important. The Red/Black stuff is mostly extreme and setup for Rock Crawlers not SxS. You are not going to run those with your stock F150, etc..... They are roll bar required trails for a reason!
The only bad thing about Ivy Branch is the parking is a bit tight in their lot. Water works is about 5 miles or so down the road so it is easy to visit from Ivy Branch, lots of room to park, plus a really nice trail head store/bathrooms/etc...
Trails there are fun and not crazy bad or anything. Again, the Greens and blues are good for 95% of the people and you get some great views!
Have a great trip and remember ride safe, they haul several riders and machines out every year from tree strikes and shoot over the edge of the mountain!

Pocahontas ATV Resort is the place to stay. Motts and his crew will set you up and help you plan a great ride of all the trail systems and the outlaw trails. Great place to stay and great people. Can't go wrong with Pocahontas resort.
