Clothier, thank you for the referral, Gary contacted us and we are going to travel to northern Utah and get him taken care of on the 20th of this month. We have family that live right close to him so we can swing by and visit a bit while we are up that way.

Yup we are thinking the same thing. Gary has the diff out, he wasn't looking forward to reinstalling it after the pinion nut was done. We will install the diff for him. When that is complete we will go down the road a bit and watch our nephew play with his new plasma table, check out his metal break and roll.

Take care stay safe stay healthy.

Well, the good news is I found the leak. All three of the bolts holding the tube to the carrier mounting weren't even finger tight. I think there is a 4th bolt up higher but it felt tight and after the following discoveries didn't seem so important.
The bad news is I have no idea how much damage that may have caused to the shaft, bolts, threads, etc.
The worse news is I thought a bolt looked too close to the transmissions casing. Turns out my frame is broken and the passenger side wheel assembly is out of line. I'm thinking I may have solved the wobble I've been chasing.
Is this somethin that can be fixed or is it up for parts?
Read thru this thread to see what he found & how he fixed it.

Take a look at the rear diff, there should be a data tag on the housing left and above the fill/check plug. That will show the build date, if is is a 2012 date is is original, a later build date it has been changed. The only way to check is to pill the diff and check the nut. 20% stay tight, 80% are prone to coming loose and fail.
Mileage or driving style doesn't appear to be a determining factor. We have seen them loose, <15ft,lbs at under 400 miles, the other end of the chart >8000 miles and still tight.
Kind of like rolling the dice, some rolls are winners some rolls crap out.

Im a little confused on the tag info. Are you saying that if the tag says after 2012 the the nut is good and doesn't need to be checked? I just bought a 2014 RZR-4 800 and I am considering pulling it apart and checking it.
Thanks!!

Les was answering a specific question by Jafo2.
If the date on Jafo2's diff was 2012, then Jafo2's differential was original in his 2012 RZR.
Any RZR 800 differential built after early 2008 WILL have a nylock pinion nut, and is in need of service.
If you did not receive assurance from the seller (photos or service record) you MUST assume that the pinion nut has not been replaced, and will need to pull diff and check.

Ok thanks I get it now. I guess I'll start pulling it apart. Any leads on where to buy the necessary tools to tighten that nut?

Did the “Dance” and still had to pay the fiddler. I also have a 2014 800 4 LE and found my pinion nut backing off @ 500 miles so I bough the components I found on this site, (thanks guys), and pulled mine out. Since I didn’t have the tools available I took my diff to a 4wd shop and walked them through the steps. They said np we got ya. Yeah… about 300 miles later bang. Grenaded the diff with a racquet ball size hole. Luckily we just got back close to camp and I could pull with the front wheels while the back occasionally locked up. New diffs are still available @$1500 but I found they will still have the original issue and you will have to pull them apart and go through the process of Loctite, re torque ing and (important) staking the nut. When I pulled my old unit apart I found the shop did not stake the nut and it backed off again. I found a rebuilt unit from CW Motorsports for $1250 and they (supposedly) have updated the unit with the rebuild. Fingers crossed. Anyway thought it wouldn’t hurt to put this out there again. There are still a lot of 800 units out there and probably new owners by now.

The nylock nut should not be re-used and changed to a quality all metal lock nut.

Which by the way have been used on automotive pinions for decades and are single use. They have to be pitched and a new one used when taken apart and re-assembled.

Polaris using a nylock nut to begin with is just stupidity.
