I have read a thousand thread this week just to get a handle on good and bad points. Some of the information has been great, this is a great forum!

Just my opinion:

The good: I love the air box, I see a lot of people complaining about it and I know Polaris has a history of bad air boxes, but I think the 900 was well thought out. May not be great for you sand guys, but I am in the North East and we have dirt, dust and mud. I love the high intake with prefilter. The prefilter could be a little better but I see where they offer almost an outerwear type prefilter now. I did grease around the edges like some members suggest. I so bad want to buy a K&N style filter, but cant find a reason to do so, especially since it will sit lower and next to the exhaust, unless I just buy a drop in style K&N and I may do that yet.

The OK: The interior is OK, my friends just bought the Can Am Commader 1000X. It has a gate shifter, nicer seats and steering wheel, a tac and just overall looks higher quality. It also has front bumper and rock sliders as standard. But I recognize the 900 is what it is, a pure performance machine and you really don't need a BMW interior.

The bad: The shifter, it suck, Polaris needs a gate shifter. It too hard to go from P to Reverse. I always end up going to N first then back to reverse. The steering weal is pretty cheep also. I just bought a new steering wheal and shifter handle already because they look so cheep. The axles look pretty small also, I dont do any crazy jumps but we do see a lot of rocks and side hill climbs, only time will tell if they hold up.

The irritating part: No oil viscosity listed, only use Polaris oil. Not to start an oil thread, but that is total crap. Even Harley the king of buy OEMfluids tell you if you cant use Harley oil to use a good quality diesel motor oil.

Anyways, love the 900, even though is sounds like I am complaining, nothing is perfect, that is why they have aftermarket.

oh and 1 more thing I really like, I was able to get full coverage from Progressive for a $120 a year, partially because I have my other quads and street bikes thru them also, but they have the CC listed wrong for the 900 I think also, They insisted it was on 720CC, I said, OK, for $120 for full coverage, that is great.

# 1) I just rode 4800+ miles on the "UTV's For Wounded Warriors" ride with another XP for a total of over 10,000+ miles between us and the only Polaris part that broke was a belt... My belt has over 5000+ miles on it and the other XP has over 4700+ miles on his replaced belt... Not 1 flat between us... (I did break 4 aftermarket bead lock wheels... LOL... He didn't break any Polaris wheels...)

I'd say you bought a winner...

Glad you're happy. I can only wish I had the money for a new XP. Oh well, maybe someday. The shifter thing isn't confined to the XP, I think they all pretty much suck. As for the interior, spartan yes but easy to clean.

The XP shifter is even worse IMO..well it's the transmission detents that is different. The detents ar not all the same atrength and the gears are not evenly spaced. Park has a very strong detent, while reverse has the weakest..also P R and N are very close together, closer than N L and H. Coming out of park trying to get R without passing it is tough..I've developed a technique..I just automatically pull it back to N then bump forward into R...trying to ease it out of park into reverse is a waste of time and will just frustrate you more often than not.
I can live with it though..the good far out weighs the bad.

It's all a matter of opinion all the Polaris shifters suck if you've had better..the XP tranny feels smoother and doesnt grind into gear like the 800 if you don't let it completely drop to idle. The XP detents and spacing between gears varies more...6 of on 1/2 dozen the other..I agree though overall I prefer the XP over the 800 but the post referenced coming from park trying to go into reverse that is harder to do on the XP IMO..again both machines can use much improvement in the shifting..if you don't think so you have never shifted anything but a Polaris lol.

Went for a long ride today with my friend who bought the Commander. I started to get jealous the more I saw his. They are really nice interior and the shifter and steering wheels are great. We switch rides for a short time and that is when I was glad I bought the 900. I almost rolled his Commander X in the first 5 minutes. The X is suppose to be the sport model, but hat thing cant take a sharp corner at all. Turns I was taking with my 900 all day without second thought, you had to baby the commander around them. I did develop a rear shock squeek that is driving me nuts

I love mine, and when I first got it the shifting was a little hard to tell which position it was in, but it got better and have never had a problem since. I never have to look what position I'm in now and shifts great.

I have about 1300 miles on it now with a trip planned next month for another 500 mile run and it continues to run like a top

. The prefilter could be a little better but I see where they offer almost an outerwear type prefilter now. .
Who offers a outerwear for the pre filter?
I used an old panty hose around mine but would like something nicer.

Google it lol..seriously..someone makes a filter screen but just think about how small the opening is..if you don't mind a restriction go for it..remember the air filter is in there for a reason..the stock mesh piece is only there to stop large debris from getting into the air chamber which can be a little work to clean out.
Personally I trimmed the center of mine down to about 1/3 of the stock thickness..still stops the large debris. Any more filtering of the intake opening is just plain paranoia..
