No sound system for my RZR!

I have been contemplating a sound system for the RZR for some time now. I have been searching the net for "the" system for weeks. I even went so far as to put the squeeze on my dealer on a price for an SSV.

Then today, I went on a great ride in the mountains. Found a great spot to hang out with the gal for a beer and a sandwich and was having a great time enjoying the scenery. To paint the picture, we were at the foot hills, next to a stream facing the mountain we would climb with the RZR after lunch. Perfect weather, feeling good.

Out of no where, from the mountain we were admiring, suddenly, instead of the sound of the stream we were sitting by and the sounds of birds, we start to hear, bump, bump, bump. We both wondered what the hell? Then, looking at the top of the mountain we see a red utv (artic cat - found that out later) as the responsible party coming down. He is still a good 2 to 3 miles away, music cranked. The closer he got, the louder the bump bump bump. We were both pissed that our once tranquil hangout was sounding more like a stop light in the hood next to an idiot that likes to hear his car rattle. To make it worse, the guy pulled up within 50 feet of us to stop and hang out. Wtf? He was nice enough and waved as I thought about how much damage my .45 would do to his stereo. He turned the music off eventually. Too late.

I NEVER want to be "that guy" that feels my music is more important than anything or anyone around me. The only way to hear music while driving a RZR is to have it so loud that people miles away will hear it too. I realized, after today, that the reason I have a RZR is to get away, enjoy nature and live a little. I no longer see that including a sound system after what I experienced today. My cell phone provides the perfect volume for music when parked if needed.

If you are one of those guys that "needs" music while you drive, please consider your impact on everyone / everything around you and consider headphones. Can you imagine what our trails would sound like if everyone were cranking tunes while driving? The sad part is, these days, most could care less about how their action's impact others. Fleeting concept. No sound system for my RZR!

WoW

Well said I have never had that happen but my reaction would be the same.

I went with the rugged radio setup with intercom and headphones and iPod.

The headphones cut out the engine noise and allow my wife and I to communicate back and forth without yelling and if we want we can pipe in the old rock n roll of our choice .

Well worth every penny.

Amen. I've always thought the idea of stereo systems on ATVs/UTVs/ and even motorcycles was a bit silly. I have a good friend that is threatening to get a stereo system for his RZR and I'm not looking forward to the eventuality for all the reasons you list...and also because he listens to shitty music. :rm_thumbdown:

You have listed the reasons I have chose to not put a stereo on my RZR. When riding along I like being able to hear the beauty of a perfectly working gasoline engine. When you think about what is going on it truly is the sounds of something quite amazing. Plus you can always hear ATVs or other UTVs coming around the corner so you don't have an accident. Most importantly when I shut it off its nothing but the sounds of peaceful nature.

Great post, Rainem Man. I'll add to that RZR owners who put flow through exhausts on their rides knowing they do nothing for performance, but they like the sound.

Well said RainemMan!!! I agree 100% One night the Mrs. and I went out for a night ride up a trail just a few miles from where we live. On an old rail bed that passes through a marsh there was a small wash out, when I lifted off the throttle to slow down going through it we could hear the night sounds of the marsh. After we got through, I shut the engine off and took off our helmets and we sat there in the moonlight, beautiful warm summer night and the sounds of the birds, frogs and even the bugs was magical. We were in the middle of the marsh where the sounds were all around us, not on one side of it like you would normally experience it with the sound only coming from in front of you. Experiences like that when you least expect it are one of the best things about getting out on the RZR. If we had a stereo, we would have just driven through only hearing the "bump bump bump" you referred to and only seeing what our headlights showed us. Not to mention we would have pissed off everyone whose home we drove past getting there and back, and that's not good for the sport. I listen to enough music at home and in the truck, don't need it in the RZR. Thanks for starting a great post.

I have the SSV Works overhead system and it is pretty loud. I like to listen to my radio loud when I ride but I ride fast and hard most of the time and if Im riding slow I adjust my volume accordingly.

I know people can hear my radio when I pass them but its for only a short period of time and not over bearing loud.

When I stop I turn off my radio so I dont disturb others..

We use Bose headphones and either listen to our MP3 players to our own selections, or tune in our FM receivers to our Sirrius receiver/transmitter we also have on board.

Riding mainly on forested trails in the National Forest, loud blaring music just does not seem to fit in.

I love extremely loud music and I love extremely loud music when im on my RZR. That being said there is a time and a place for it. If I even think that someone else is around that may not want to hear it I dont play it loud but when Im at a mud event or at the swimming hole I will crank it to the hills. Different strokes for different folks.
Oh and I would be money that each and every one of you do something that annoys other people so maybe yall should just learn to not let stuff bother you so much.

LoL love my tunes. If you want piece and quiet go on hiking or horseback trails that don't allow motor vehicles.. I've got my radio on, my two way, loud exhaust, ect when I'm on the trail. Its just the nature of the beast.. You do realize just the sound of your exhaust and the damage your tires do to the trail bothers some people? As far as them parking close to you. You were alone they were alone maybe they were thinking riding buddy. Yeah I mean if I came up on a guy and women alone sitting back relaxing with no radio, ect. I'd move on through and let them be. I have met plenty of people on the trail though by parking in the same spot as others or them parking by us, but we also are in a group most of the time. Waterfalls, overlooks, ect, are spots you can't expect to be alone at. Certain places we go we have a few spots we stop at. Doesn't matter if its one person there or 20. We still stop at those spots to check it out when we are in the area..

This had nothing to do with being alone. Just a whole valley filled with music from one guy. To each their own, but I was raised a bit better than to be a dick. These days, I don't expect many to understand where I am coming from on this. It is a me generation right? "If I am having fun, everyone will get over it or there is something wrong with 'them'." You guys go ahead and blast away, but if you care, take a good look at the faces of the people in UTV's that you pass. Willing to bet they are not all that pleased.

No one said having a radio in your RZR makes you a dick. Was not on this post. Blasting your music with no regard to your surroundings is what I was calling a dick. And I think trying to compare this discussion to harleys is apples and oranges. And not having a radio in my RZR does not make me dislike those that do. That does not even make sense. As I mentioned before, many will not understand my point.

You made the comment that you were raised to not be a dick after saying the guys music filled the valley. In an open vehicle like a RZR or jeep the sound will carry even more so if you have it loud enough to hear at full throttle. Like you said y'all were the only other people in the area. It's not like he pulled into a full campground at midnight. He was out trail riding and came across another RZR while he was jamming. You made it out like that makes him a dick. Sorry your right I just don't agree. And the harly remark was just to make appoint that some people are bothered by loud toys they aren't into. Again I'm sure your RZR bothers people just like his radio bothered you. I just found the post funny cause it was made out like his radio was disturbing a quiet tranquil valley. Never mine the 1200lb gas burning sxs you had just drove through there lol.

I understand where you are coming from Raineman about people having their music so loud that you can hear it from the other side of the world.

However I understand where the other guys are coming from too liking their music loud because I like my music loud but not loud enough where it completely annoys other people but I used to like my music like that as I have hearing loss from listening to stupid loud music as a teenager.

That being said I think what Raineman means is when your riding in a park with your friend, wife, girlfriend or whatever and someone pulls up with a ridiculous loud stereo and instead of passing by he stops and just keeps on playing his music.

To me and most decent people would turn their radio down in consideration for others just out of respect. I could care less how loud your music is if your passing by but when it becomes a problem is when you stop and continue to play your music so loud that the next person has to listen to your music like your listening to it.

Just my 2cents:)

Don't take this the wrong way. Each to their own I think, no different to roaring past someone on a trail who is walking & leaving them covered in dust, trail etiquette, some use it some don't, I will be getting a sound system but don't plan on inflicting it on other people if I can avoid it, mind you I have had some pretty mean Jeep drivers try to pick a fight with me on trails just because they think they are the trail police

IMHO, it all boils down to RESPECT!

If you have a system, cool! Enjoy it but when approaching others have the decency to turn it down or off.

I don't push my tunes off on others and I expect the same in return. The trails are not the "hood", and I don't need to hear "thump thump thump" and I won't expect others to hear my tunes either. We play our stereo just loud enough to hear it in the rzr and when we approach others or stop where others have gathered the stereo gets turned off. Somtimes we don't even turn it on so we can hear and enjoy the sounds of nature too!

RESPECT each other and above all RESPECT the trails!

It depends on what I'm doing.

The radio system SSV was sold, My home built system was just sold to my buddy. Since the RZR is for sale and he wanted the radio and the proarmor doors.

But, my radio was great for when I was just out cruising the back roads. A bit of music was nice. Now when I was in the woods, I liked it quiet because I found the music distracting in technical trails.

Sometimes though depending on who we were riding with, watching the young girls dance to the music was a good time. Being 30 now with a kid, well, I don't get many chances to watch cute barely legal girls grind on each other!
