New guy coming from a Cat (couple questions)

Hi guys, sold my prowler after a year of riding with a friend with a rzr.

I'm now in full out shopping mode, but have a couple questions.

Found a 2009 800 with 1900miles. It has a ton of options including full cab w/heater and the glass style window with wiper. Along with that it has bumpers, winch, rock silders.
He's asking $9500, is this a decent buy considering it has the cab? It's seen only farm use with 150 hours.

I'm getting frustrated with the used market as they all want close to new where I live in Canada. Pointers?

Welcome, I too had simular problems finding my RZR after I sold my Rhino.........It just depends on what you are looking for. The dollars seem to me a tad high. Offer 9.

Thanks for the welcome and advice guys.

I can a 900xp and was tempted but with accessories I'll be double the price. Just don't think I can spend that much yet. Hopefully this 2009 won't lose too much value after I put s suspension on it. I'll definitely be wanting that!

Dealer price in Canada where I live is 16,000 out the door for a 800s. That's with no options. Is it really worth the extra 6 grand? That's not including extended warranty. A 900xp would run me amost 20 out the door. Id buy a base red 900xp from Minnesota for 14, but they can't sell new to Canadians, only used.

So, just for the sake of asking, can you do a private to private sale if one lives across the baorder? Or do you have to pay fee's fopr something like that living in Canada?

Private to private is no problem. We have to pay tax at the border on anything we bring across as a penalty for not shopping locally.

I can buy from a U.S. dealer as long as it's used. The title needs to be previously owned.

If I was to buy a used or new rzr from a local dealer I would pay the same tax that I would pay at the border. (so in the end it doesn't really matter where I buy)

My only advantage would be buying a privately owned rzr up here.
Everyone up here is asking 12k+ for ANY used rzr s, havent seen one cheaper yet. All the ones local to me are asking 14,000 with xxxx miles. Are you kidding me? A new one is 14,400 before tax. Tax is 10% however..

Wow, that is some serious cion. Maybe I should haul mine up there and put a for sale sign on it! I remember when I work at a dealer in AK we would have guys come from across the boarder to buy machines, and smuggle them back across the boarder! ATV trafficing, theres a new career path!

Hi Geoff

Before I bought a new S last year I looked for used units too but here in Saskatchewan the market was totally flat. Alberta may have more options for a used unit but if you are talking that much for a used standard, add the cost of the S conversion (with Fox Shox) and you are nearing the cost of a new S. For what it is worth, my money would be on a brand new S le. If you have to save for a while, maybe you will have a new S le with an XP style drive train... cool!

Give the guys at Guertin in Saskatoon a call...

Nice to hear from another Sask rider!

I have looked in Alberta, Manitoba, Sask, and now finding some better stuff in North Dakota and Minnesota. All similar distance from where I am.

Just heard from the U.S. seller the title isnt in his name, and he never switched it over. Going to see if they will allow it to come across if now, screw it I'll go new.

My big thing is all the accessories this 2009 standard has. (here is the one I'm looking at)

I can buy it for $9500, have it in Canada for 10,500. Put 2 grand in suspension on it and still be cheaper then a used S up here with a full heated cab for winter!

Unless those cabs are junk it seems like a good deal to me. Hope I'm not out to lunch!

If I rode often I'd probably buy new regarless, but I only get out 2-3 times a month (but when I go it's all day with a bbq strapped on the back, love it!) I have 20grand saved, but it would be nice to have some left over. If I bought new and put accessories on it would be gone with the wind.

Ya, those accessories are nice for sure but they don't help if the rig they are bolted to is beat. I ride mostly in LaRonge year round with a half windshield (and good insulated gear). There is no question that -25 C and colder sucks ass so I pick my days carefully. When I bought mine I knew I needed a winch for the muskeg and a half windshield to break the wind in the winter. As I could afford it, I snorkled it and am planning for doors and rocker protection next... but I know that the rig I am bolting all this expensive crap to is sound and worth the money I am spending on it.
No title sends a red flag up for me. I am not saying that there aren't great deals on used units out there, just be sure you are buying the right one.
By the way, I am not peaching or talking down to you... I just want to pass on what I learned from the purchase of mine. Oh ya, it kicks ass and makes me giggle like a kid every time I ride it!
