I have an appointment with my dealer next week. They said there was a 3 week back order on the VR. I'm getting a VR from Alba Racing to use until the dealer gets one in for the warranty. I'll throw the spare in the tool box so we don't get stuck out on a ride.

Dropped off my rzr at my dealer, Stillwater Power Sports, this morning for diagnosis of the VR. They called this afternoon asking specifics on the symptoms.

When I got home my VR from Nate at Alba Racing was on my doorstep! Thank you Nate!!

Along with a couple of belt temp gauges. Last time out at Clayton rock crawling our belts seemed to be suffering. Plus I tow a bale wagon on the farm so I want to monitor that as well.

Thank again Nate!!!!

Thanks for the pic, that looks like a great spot for the temp gauge!

What temps are you seeing, under what conditions?

We rock crawl quite a bit, Nate suggested a inline blower. I've used some of those blowers to power brake ducts. If we are still having heat issues crawling I will definitely install blower.

The VR problem is exactly why I bought a spare and keep it in my spare parts box I take when we go somewhere, my family and I have 3 1000s between us and the VR has already gone out two of them already. Ya gotta love throwing down 20 plus grand down on a machine that was made as cheaply as possible.

On our Rotax engines 170F is a killer on ignition modules and reg/rec.
I use and recommend temp strips. (I am the only Rotax authorized Heavy Maint. mechanic in AZ for Rotax aircraft engines) You just stick them on. My VR never sees over 145F and I relocated it to the back of the passenger seat. The temp strips are a good way to keep an eye on temps around the engine area or on important parts. Then you don't have to guess what's hot or not. You can check all sorts of areas with these and pick the temp range that best suits your needs. Mounting it up high on the back of the passenger seat also keeps it out of the water most of the time. Extended water time and constant immersions has to be a killer.

Thanks for the additional info guys!. I wasn't aware there was an alternative VR. Do you have a part number on the 65 amp VR?

UPDATE: Stillwater Power Sports called about noon today and said they were ready to warranty my VR and asked if I could bring the rzr by. When I showed up the service guy was positive and professional. He said I could pick my rzr up Friday afternoon so we wouldn't miss our ride this weekend. I am satisfied with their response and am a happy customer.

Here's an update on my trip to Stillwater Power Sports to get my VR warrantied. They called today and said my rzr was ready to be picked up. While on the phone they said they didn't find anything wrong with the VR. He knew I had purchased a VR and had it in hand. He said I should just put it on and run it. That way if it ran ok then we would know it was the VR. That kinda sounded silly to me since we would never know for sure and I wouldn't get a VR to carry on trips. Since we were on the phone I just said I'll be by to get it.

I ran home and hooked my trailer and drove the 20 miles to the dealer to pick it up. I stopped in at the service counter desk to get my keys and see what else they might could tell me. They basically said that they hooked it up and saw there were voltage spikes logged but that there wasn't anything wrong now.

While the guy was getting his paperwork off the computer I told him there was definitely something wrong due to all the symptoms it was exhibiting. He agreed that the VR was probably on its way out and that he would order one. I'm just trying to figure out how it they couldn't find anything wrong.

Then he says since they didn't find anything wrong that there would be a 30 minute shop charge. I was pretty much blown away by that statement. My rzr craps out showing every sign of a know problem that they can't seem to find and now they want to fricken charge me? Yep, I have a big problem with that.

I told them that not only was the original warranty still in effect but that I also had the 5 yr extended warranty so that in effect, I had two warranty's on the this machine and they were wanting to charge me? He immediately said that he wouldn't charge me and that they would "eat the charge". Seriously, its got two warranty's on it.

I asked if he wanted me to go over to the main building and sort it out with them. He quickly answered no that he would handle it.

So, I was pretty much done but I did tell him that I was leaving the original VR on until it quit again because I wanted to keep the one I bought as a spare. He didn't seem to like that statement. I'm still trying to do the right thing so I asked if he wanted me to do the relocate and seal the plate to the VR so we could get the most life possible out of it. He said no, just leave it until it quits. Sounds silly to me but whatever.

So I loaded up and left. Once I got home I checked the hour meter and odometer against the pictures of them I took when I dropped it off. Mileage was the same and the hour meter showed only .1 hour. Looks like they didn't do much to try to diagnose the VR or let the machine warm up. Failing electronics usually don't like heat.

I let the rzr warm up on the drive, it was muddy and I didn't want to get it all crappy for the Alba temp gauge install tomorrow. After I heard the fan cycle on and off a couple of times I revved to about 5k rpm and saw the voltage fluctuate between 13.8 and 14.3. Definitely not the wild swings but not very stable either.

Tomorrow I'm going to install the belt temp gauge then I'm going for a ride and see how the VR acts. I am betting it won't make it very far. I am definitely taking the spare VR.

Anyways, just sharing the experience and giving everyone a heads up on what I consider a run a round on getting my VR warrantied. I will post up either way tomorrow after the ride.
13.8 to 14.3 is completely normal. When you see it spike to 17 or drop to 10 thats when you know you have a problem.

Do you have any more? We just arrived in Wickenburg Az from Colorado and have the 168 code with high voltage spikes. Ugggg

Check engine light while backing out of the trailer. None of the Az dealers around here are showing them in stock.

Update.

I went for a ride this afternoon and sure enough the VR wasn't happy. Spiked up and down (12/18 volts), power steering quit, check engine light ect. for a bit then settled down. Didn't ride anywhere wet though. Tomorrow I will get it wet and see how long it lasts.

Nate had 2 VR's left last I heard. 619-562-0188.

I'm the guinea pig that is running one of Rick's Motorsport Electric's Hot Shot Series (MOSFET) VR. I've had it installed about 3 weeks and so far so good (knock on wood!) Not sure when Rick will be selling these but I know he intends to start making these for the 1k's and I believe he will be selling them for $150. Better product and price than OEM. Hope this helps you guys out, here is his info info below, good luck all!

I was told today (Rick's) that these are designed to kick out the external fuse in the circuit (on the car) if something goes wrong. Whether that is accurate or not I don't care as it reminds me to pick up spare fuses anyways.
$150 price confirmed; part tucked away for a spare.

Btw, I have no affiliation to Rick. I'm in Ohio and he's in New Hampshire. Through research I stumbled across him and found out that when it comes to toys and Electric's, "he's the man!" He's helped me out and is a great guy/company to work with through my experience. Again, good luck to all- don't want to bash Polaris, love their rides, just not happy with all these issues popping up and I know if we don't stick to together and help each other out, who will!

Rocky Mountain would not ship to anything other than the billing address since we are a first time customer.

no dealers around here would take one off a crate unit because they are back ordered until 4-20 (funny date as I think Polaris is high sometimes) but found a dealer in Utah that has one and will overnight to us.

Thanks to all that offered help!
