Go to a quality tool store and buy a thread file that matches the threads and clean them up.While your there get a brass hammer.Also that nut isnt brass it just has a yellow colored coating.

 

steve is correct..easy fix with the small files or even a dremel tool with a fine wheel..I use both on my golf cart axels that are always getting screwed up..

Or use a tap on the nut and a die on the bolt... Or Sears has a thread chaser that's not a lot of money...

At first you go....what the hell is this?
But you would be amaised how often you use it.

Good tool, I'd recommend it for the tool box
(you still need a brass hammer)(or a rubber dead blow)

 

Well after searching around town I couldn't find this thread file so I opted for a Die and it worked perfectly! It was actually extremely hard getting it started because that's where the damaged threads were but once I squared away how to get it started everything worked pefect.

the files are great i have had them for years.....i thin post tools has some look for a tool store or get them on line their are alot of brands even nappa can get them
