I was changing the oil seal (right rear axle) and found small metal chips on the spline of the rear axle. The spline teeth look good so the chips must be coming from the internal gears or bearings? The wheels spin smooth while jacked up and show no other signs of concern- 2008 with about 1100 miles.

Is this a common issue? Sign of major issues or just normal wear?
Should I be flushing the differential somehow before refilling?
