Low Voltage

Hey everybody,

Went out to the sand dunes today. I have a 2015 xp4 1000. Rode around for a couple hours nothing to hard or crazy.

Right before we were going to leave I went for a quick little ride and noticed that the voltage was low. It was at 10.6 went back to the camp to load up so we could leave. Tried to start it and it wouldn't start. Jumped it off and it cranked right up. So I went for another ride to charge up the battery and the volts started dropping and the check engine light came on and I lost my power steering. Got it loaded on the trailer and I tried to rev it up and it wouldn't rev up very high, also I only had about 7 volts at the time.

I have checked the cables on the battery and they are good and tight.

Could it be a bad battery or is it possible the stator is bad?

Also I have a 30'' light bar and 2 lighted whips but I wouldn't think that would affect it. I have had it for a month and it has about 24 hours on it.

Thank for any help.

Three possible causes. Voltage regulator, stator, or battery itself. The low voltage will cause the machine to go into limp mode, which limits the engine rpm, driving speed, most likely lost power steering because of the low voltage. Be very careful with running/driving it as little as possible until it's fixed - low voltage can do permanent damage to many of the electronics that run the machine. You can eliminate the battery by charging it, waiting an hour or two then have it load tested. If you've got a service manual it should/will have instructions on testing stator and voltage regulator. Otherwise its dealer time.

I had the exact same thing happen on my 570. I know you said you checked the cables but so did I during the problem. What solved it was I found on mine there are two positive cables and two negative cables. When I was working on the rzr one of the positive cables had slipped back into the rubber grommet and I could not see it, so I had only connected one. On day two of trouble shooting the problem, I discovered the cable I had missed. This is the one that recharges the battery. So it would work until the battery got low and then the problems you described would start. Just a thought.

I wouldn't think a disconnected battery cable was missed as the OP has 24 hours on it, unless some recent work was done.
IIRC, low voltage should be a bad stator or broken wire?
High voltage would be regulator issue.
To the OP, did you check the chassis side of the battery ground secure?
