Low battery while running

Hey thought I'd see if any one has had this issue before or may have an idea of what is going on before I start into trying to figure out what my problem is.

I was stuck in a pretty good hole tonight, winched out and decided to head back.
Couldn't pass up giving the hole another go and the hole has beat me 2-0, so while winching out of the hole the second time I see my cluster show "low 10.6-10.9" for a moment so I continue, it comes up again along with dimming lights and so I winch out a couple inches at a time, my cluster would go out if I had the winch on for more then a few seconds. By the end of getting myself out I had an engine light come on, the engine light as gone away but if you scroll through the display options there is now a thing that says "check eng"
It was running well enough and I was to far and to late to be walking home so I was able to get it back with quite a few cool down stops due to a caked up radiator.

The rzr had a tough time tonight for sure, so I'm thinking it must either be the battery that is pooched or the charging system has shit the bed..... I'm not really all to sure as this is the first time if had much of any issues with this machine, any suggestions would be appreciated.

First, recall that the RZR 800 has a 500watt stator. That's marginal at best...

If you used the winch twice getting out of the hole...then you've put a lot of drain on the battery, as the RZR charging system can't keep up with that kind of load.

First, I would connect a trickle charger to the battery and see if it charges the battery, given a couple of days.

Then fire up and go for a ride and see if things are back to normal.

If not, take the battery to someplace like NAPA and have it load tested. If bad, get a good AGM battery. Like an Oddessy or even an OEM Polaris.

Make sure the battery posts, the connection to the frame Ground and the connection to the starter solenoid are clean and tight.

Just thoughts,

And please, go back in and complete your profile. Then we know what year and model RZR you have, where you are located and your name. Really helps us help you!!!

Thanks,

Pirate

UTV Inc. a forum sponsor vendor sells a 60 amp alternator kit for the 800 (at least they used to). Not cheap and some assembly required.

OP - if you continue to have trouble with the charging system, you may have fried your voltage regulator. They hate heat. The 08 RZR's had them behind the driver's seat and we saw many toasted regulators here on the forum. In 09 Polaris moved them to in front of the radiator and pretty much solved the problem. But in your case with a clogged radiator and the over heating you may have burned up your regulator. Once you get everything cleaned and either replace the battery or confirm that it's OK, see if your charging system is able to keep the battery charged, if not most likely it's the regulator.
