How well do these work? Honestly. Do you use a second metal band to attach these over rubber boot or use one metal band to secure both rubber and leather boot?

Does the axle need to be taken apart to install?

Yes they slip on the axle once you take the cv off. We use safety wire to secure them to the cv and let the axle side of the boot move freely.
