(Just got back from Moab where we attended a meeting with the committee that was tasked to make a recommendation to the Tourism Council about our Special Event Permit. They voted unanimously to recommend that our permit be approved! Now we wait till the first of September for the Tourism Council to approve it. It was awesome to have the support of the EMS/Sherriff office as well as everyone else in attendance of the Discount Tire Rally on the Rocks. It is a testament to all you participants who have helped to stay on the trails and Throttle Down in Town.)
That's Great news!!! Thank you for posting this Frank.
We are a proud sponsor of Discount tire Rally on the Rocks and fully support the off-road community. The Discount Tire Rally on the rocks has grown into one of the very best UTV events in the entire country. Lanse and all the volunteers work tirelessly to make sure all the participants respect the town and the environment.
We look forward to this event becoming better and better each and every year...
After several meetings with the Grand County Travel Council, the Discount Tire Rally on the Rocks is approved for 2018!. We are currently working with the BLM on securing a 10 year permit as well to ensure that the Rally will continue in the years to come.
Rally registration will openJanuary 1st, 2018. We are busy working on making 2018 more organized and better than ever!
As our fees increase we are able to hold our current pricing for 2018, and we are also working with the BLM on a trail restoration day again as well.
Please visit rallyontherocks.com for trail and pricing information.
Need some help with this question. My buddy and I are finally going to make the trip out for ROTR this year! My buddy has a huge RV he just bought and we are trailing out our 2 rides. We plan on parking the RV at OKRV which is listed as the closest to the trail head where the "arena" is. The RV is too big to pack up every day and trailer everyday. The problem is that directions show it is still 8 miles from the main area. Are we able to drive our rzrs on the street to get to the trail head or? Not having been before, we have no idea how to make this work. Our rzr's have lights, mirrors, etc, but do not have turn signals or license plates. His RV is one of the large ones with slide outs, etc, that's why we cant just pack up and trailer every day and night. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

The rally organizes police escorts for their rides, but if you want to go into town, or go ride trails on your own, you either need to trailer, or be street legal.
That means license plates, insurance, and all of the required equipment. South Dakota will license out of state residents over the phone for about $50 a year, as long as you paid at least 4% tax on your unit.
Then it is just a matter of getting turn signals and a horn, as you already have the mirrors.
You need to be street legal to drive on the road. The good news is it's not that difficult to get. I am licensed in AZ & live in WI friends are licensed in SD & live in IL & KY South Dakota is cheaper in the long run but AZ is easier.
Apparently I put in the wrong address. The OKRV park we want to stay it is literally right next to the arena. We will just have to limit our trail selections to those that you don't have to trailer to. AWESOME!
Was looking at the following in this order:
Porcupine (easy first day ride)
Steel Bender
Hells Revenge (HAVE to hit to hot tub)
Cliff Hanger
Moab Rim
I am hoping we register fast enough to get these selected trails!
Any suggestions or tips would be great!
We ended up getting an rv spot at KOA which is right there as well. You are correct, OKRV is booked. We should be good at KOA as it is literally 1 driveway away. I am hoping with the police presence and as escorts, they would be okay with us driving on on the side of the road slowly for the few hundred feet the driveway is away if we dont get our rigs street titled.
If you zoom in tight on Google Maps, you'll see a two-track running along the highway on both sides in the dirt/sand. Stay on that and you won't have any problems. Can also get to Susie's Branding Iron restaurant and the Shell station that way, just north of KOA.
Private property? Looks more like state highway right-of-way, but I'm not an expert. Possibly one of the mayor's buddies owns land adjacent to it, and riders abuse their land instead of staying on the track, so the complaint.
Yeah, I'm not sure...just remembered him saying that they were going to crack down on it. I'm plated so I didn't really pay a whole lot of attention to that part.
Updates and headaches. SO, I am the kind of person that likes to have my ducks in a row before I do a long trip. I called Spanish Trail Arena and the woman I spoke to (Melinda or Belinda) said the cops were very relaxed during rally and as long as you had turn signals, horn etc and bought the OHV pass at a Maverick station etc for trails, you could ride the back roads to get gas, etc.
SO, to be sure I called the Moab police department, the woman I spoke to said absolutely not permitted to ride on the dirt track located next to the highway and NO the Utah OHV permit does not allow you to ride on the back roads. SO essentially I am going to have to find a way to street title mine and my buddies rides soon. Thing is, Ohio wont allow rzrs to be "street legal". One option we have (please let me know your opinions) is that my buddy who is driving the rv out has a repo business and has several "special" Ohio plates for him to transport vehicles. They are Ohio plates, just not tied to any specific vehicle and are registered to his company. My buddy and I WILL have turn signals, horn, mirrors, etc on our rides. I might seem like a worry wart but I do NOT want to get out there and then get ticketed for just trying to get to the Spanish trail head. Not to mention we will need to buy fuel at some point and maybe grab more food from the store and wont have a vehicle to drive unless our rigs are "street legal".
I saw someone posted about getting licensed in SD online or something, but how the hell does that work?
We cant be the ONLY ones who are driving an RV down and no separate tow vehicle and not be street titled.
Sorry for so many posts about this but I don't want to have to drive a separate vehicle out from Cincinnati just to tow them 1500 feet every morning and afternoon from MOAB KOA to the arena. Any other advice from you all would be appreciated.
That was me that posted that. It’s really easy. I’m actually going through the process all over again because I just bought a new 1000xp. Essentially there are some forms you need from South Dakota dmv website. Print them and fill them out. Then send them into union county. You will have them in a week or 2. I think it costed $50
Yea. If you look at the forms that I posted you will see “out of state”. That’s you. That means they are going to license your rzr in SD using your home address in Ohio. Your not scamming them. They know full well you don’t live there. Then they will send you a plate in the mail.
I actually did more researching based off of all of your all feedback and contacted South Dakota directly. Spoke to an actual person on the phone and she was great. For anyone wanting to do this here is the info you need!
Documents required are as follows:
· Copy of valid title or current out of state registration
· Proof of Tax paid to your state. (must be a receipt from the state, not a dealer’s purchase agreement) If proof of tax paid can’t be provided, you will be subject to 4% tax on the purchase price if recently purchased, or on the NADA clean retail value if you have owned more than 6 months.
· Copy of valid driver’s license for each registered owner
· Social Security number for each registered owner (can be written directly on application)
· Phone number we can contact you at once we have a total. You must pay by debit or credit card over the phone. We will not accept out of state checks. We charge a $25.00 administrative fee for all non-resident title work handled through the mail in addition to the normal tax, title, and license fees.
A couple things to keep in mind:
If there are multiple owners on the title/registration, then all of them must sign the application unless the names are joined with “or”
While South Dakota allows an out of state resident to license ATVs, your state still may not allow them to be driven on their roads. You are choosing to license in SD at your own risk. Please consult your local laws.
Awesome! Julie from SD called me on Monday to process my credit card for their plates. $65 or something. Good for people to have options like Idaho too though! Seems like the process you mentioned was even simpler, but I just went with what i had researched since I had already started the process. Now we can ride to get fuel/ice etc. Awesome!
Yup, I sent my forms in on Monday, had plates on Friday. Don't forget, Utah requires turn signals. I bought from Corbin (Idaho)...excellent kit, truly plug and play.
Did the same - kit from Corbin and just sent in my forms today. I'm looking forward to driving to/from the trails! I'm heading out to Moab for the weekend to check it out (plus Jeeps at the Safari). Can't believe that it's been 11 years since I've been to Moab! Should be a lot more fun driving a Rzr as opposed to my Heep!
Got my new ride for the rally. It’s funny, around here in the Midwest you see mostly rangers quads, the occasional 900s and trail models. You never see anything like the machines people have out west. So last year we went to the rally for the first time in the 900s and I looked at my wife and said we’re upgrading for next year.... she agreed. I felt like I was driving a toy lol, not that there is anything wrong with the 900s but next following tricked out machines made me want to go all out. Family outgrew the two seater anyway.
Skid, clutch, and roof are on. Installing 4 pointers door lowers and the ryco signal kit this weekend.
