vehicle was delivered on 12/11/12 and it only ran twice. first when it was delivered, second the next day, then done. after that it didn't start at all. last saturday 12/15/12 my son and i failed to enjoy the beautiful day, coz the thing won't start. i did call the dealership they sent couple of guys to my home and tried to start the vehicle, failed. they decided to send a trailer and they did haul the vehicle to the dealership.

went shopping...

when i returned from shopping, was very happy coz the vehicle was waiting outside of my garage (but it was dark already), they dropped it off, it starts! but it backsfire a lot and it died a lot, so i have to start it over and over again. until i held on the gas pedal for a while, let the engine warm, it didn't die. the next day Sunday 12/16 - had fun with my son driving in the woods. sounds great but again it backsfire when in neutral. so back to the shed, done for the day.

thursday 12/20/12 - decided to get some fresh air with my son, it was like 31F outside. when i tried starting the vehicle, there was still day light, day lights gone the thing just won't start. i did everything, it just won't start.

friday 12/21/2012 - first i thought the world will end, but it didn't. called my sales agent and he absorbed my frustration. they said they're going to send people to my home or trailer later this afternoon.

sorry it's a bit long, but this is my frustration.

Happy Holidays...

Clayton, thanks but it's 170 i believe there's no computer on board.

This is a 170 right? If so there is no computer. Its sounds like it is running too lean. Change the pilot jet up to a 40 to start. I bet that will help with your cold starting.
Smartdave, yes it's 170 and i'm not understanding what do you mean by "running too lean"? i may suggest to the dealership to change the pilot jet to a 40. thanks a lot!

Guys, he's in the 170 forum talking about a 170.... :) Anyway, almost like maybe its too lean on the fuel mixture. Even more of an issue when its cold and its cold outside. Aren't the 170's still carburated? If so, is it jetted correctly? When you 1st try starting it and it won't start next time (assuming the dealer doesn't do anything), try squirting a little fuel down the carb and try starting it. If it starts up, then its probably too lean.
roguedriver, God knows i'm not technically inclined and God knows i'm not sure if it's jetted correctly. it's brand new. I will try doing that. Thanks a lot.

:) But once I changed my pilot jet to a 40 it made all the difference in cold starting. But now that I converted to EFI I don't care about jets :)
i'm guessing it's a must to change the pilot jet to 40?

appreciate you guys...

Sorry to hear about your experience with your RZR so far; the off-road gods are not smiling on you! If it were me, I'd be going non-linear!. While still at this early juncture, you might consider trading it in to the dealer for an 800 or an XP.................Just a suggestion.......

Cheers

It's really not hard to change the jets. Takes about 10 minutes and a Philips screwdriver. Look at the carb and on either side there is a clamp. Loosen both clamps. Once you do that you can rotate the top of the carb toward the front. Then remove the 3 Philips screws on the bottom of the carb. Then pull bottom of carb off (gas will spill unless you drained the carb) you will the see the pilot jet and the main jet. With a regular screw driver remove the pilot jet, then replace with the 40. You are screwing into aluminum don't use hulk hands.. Replace carb bottom then straighten carb then tighten clamps. Done and enjoy

Hopefully this will help

Here is the bottom of the carb

Image

Remove the bottom 3 screws and pull the bottom off. Make sure the gasket stays in the recess when you reinstall the bottom

After pulling off the float bowl (carb bottom) this is what you will see

Then pull off that white cover. Keep note of its orientation. Then you will see the pilot jet.

Unsrew it and screw in the 40

Then put the white cover back and screw the float bowl back on.

Hope the pics helped

Smartdave. Way to help a brother out! that was way above and beyond the call to post those incredible pics and instructions. We all learned something here!

I have seen several 170's sit on showroom floors for months. I wonder if his main jet is coated with green goo from stale gas? It may be repairable by just cleaning the existing jet until a 40 arrives.

RMR Man, yes it's above and beyond considering i'm very new to this forum. couldn't be more happy.

Just to update you guys, they picked up the vehicle around 6:30pm and i told them if they could check the carb and replace the pilot jet with 40, both guys were nodding not up & down but sideways, they have no clue.

Keep you guys posted.

I just bought a rzr170 about 1 1/2 months ago for
My daughter. The thing is extremely cold natured. I've kept it at my father in laws and have been playing with it ( it will be
Sitting outside Christmas morning). I changed the pilot to a 40 and the main to a 110, I also adjusted the throttle adjustment in the front end (its behind the Gas pedal) After that we were doing donuts and I don't even have to choke the thing to start it. It may be running a tad bit rich but, I don't mind since it's cold outside. Maybe this summer i'll change the main jet to a 102 or 104 if it seems to be running rich but, I like the way it starts and runs now. Remember it's carbureted and the jets that work for the guy in Florida will be different for the guy living in the mountains. If the 40 doesn't fix your problem, try changing your main jet too.

Kyatvrider, thanks for the input, but i now have second thought of getting the vehicle back. coz last night a service guy phoned me and informed me that they can't start the thing, they tried and tried (whole day saturday) but they just can't start it. i told the service guy, don't bother, i'm not taking it back home. I gave the guy a heads up that i'll be stopping by at their store on wednesday to formally return the vehicle.

Keep you guys posted.

There was another thread on the forum about bad gasoline and the rzr backfiring and not starting in cold weather. Did anyone totally drain the tank and put fresh in. Carbureted machines are usually pretty easy to track the problem down. It's either Gas or Spark.....

Well dave, you've been very helpful since i started this frustration, but my gut's telling me they didn't check the obvious. If they did, they didn't know how to fix the obvious. Thanks.

Almost sounds like the dealership didnt drain the shipping oil in the engine and refill with normal oil before they handed it over to you.
If thats the case......the rings are shot and the lil guy isnt getting any compression
I can't say they didn't or did... but i know they forgot to put fuel in the vehicle because it was in reserved and almost empty. I think this is one of dave's obvious things that the dealer should pay attention.

i wish my dealer have guys like you.
