Hard shifting on 2010 800 Rzr

I am on my second shift cable in a year. After changing the shift cable the first time, the shifting was still a little harder then I would expect to be normal, but it did work and shift into gear properly. Now I am digging a little deeper to see if there is another cause for the hard shifting. I removed the detent spring and ball to check the condition. Spring looks normal, but the ball might have a little wear on it. With the detent spring and ball removed, moving the shift lever on side of transmission without cable is smooth and very easy. I haven't removed the outer detent sleeve yet to inspect that. I am not sure if there is enough clearance to remove with transmission installed. Hopefully there is. Could a worn sleeve cause hard shifting or am I looking in the wrong place?

I'm going with the guess you are not the original owner. Seems like there was a thing to beef up the stock spring with a stiffer one, back in 2011 or so. Suggest you buy a new factory spring and detent ball and try that first. If that takes care of it, then cheap and easy fix. Otherwise it requires a internal replacement of parts. If memory serves.

Be sure you are running a good synthetic gear lube in transmission, like Amsoil. And you are correct, a stiffer spring will make it shift harder. The 800 has this thing of not always going into gear all the way. The stiffer spring was a pour attempt to fix that. Best fix is to hold a little pressure on the shift lever and give throttle. Some times you can feel it drop into gear better.

Ok, I get your line of thought now. Possibly has a stiffer spring installed then the original factory one. It is a VERY stiff spring. Will order in a replacement spring and ball and see what happens. If I can get the detent sleeve out without removing transmission, I will replace that as well. Will attempt tomorrow afternoon.

This may sound dumb but i was doing it at first but only with eng running. I allways had my foot on the brake when shifting till dealer told me not to, once i stopped doing that it was much smoother. Sure its not ur problem but just thought id mention it

Followup:
Ordered in a new ball and spring for the shift detent. The spring was exactly like the one I took out, but the new ball has made a big difference in the way it shifts. It is much smoother and easier now that it is changed out. If it looks like the ball has wear on it...change it out!! Cheap fix for a change.
