Half windshield questions

I just put a half windshield on my XP and have a couple of questions:

How much turbulence do these cause in the passenger compartment? I've heard rumors that it tends to drop the dust and dirt on the driver and passenger if not set up correctly.

As far as setting up correctly, I was told that the way to combat this turbulence is to put a rear panel up behind the seats. Anyone notice if this helps or hinders?

I'm just trying to get info on how to dial it in making this a comfortable ride that doesn't dust me to the point of it being a hassle. The whole idea of a half windshield was to combat the wind in my face as I'm driving, so the after affects of installing it may end up being a secondary issue.

If the rear panel is the optimal way, then I need to go about making one. I would like it to be similar to what you see on a convertible car - fabric panel with a window. Being that I made my cage, I'll have to figure out how to make the panel, how to mount it (I'm thinking velcro straps that wrap around themselves) and also how to put a flexible window in it.

Any ideas of a material to use for a window? It needs to have the ability to be sewn in and not become brittle, crack, etc. Shower curtain?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Dust in Ohio this time of year??? If you have dust, I need to come your way!

All we have right now is mud and it's getting old (and keeping me off the motocross track and my CRF450 - darn it!)

Good to hear that it's a more comfy ride. :ride:

I have the half windshield -- for the same reason you bought one--to reduce the wind blast on cold days or under dusty conditions. I recently spent some time with a group of experienced desert riders around Quartzite, AZ and found that my cab had a LOT more dust accumulate in it that did their cabs (all Rzr S or 900s). The difference was that I had used the edge seal to seal the bottom of the windsheild to the top of the Rzr dash. This caused low pressure behind the windshield and therefore drew dust into the cab. I simply eliminated the lower seal (used a short section in the middle to stabilize the plexi--about 8 inches long). This one inch gap should increase the pressure behind the plexi and reduce the dust. The other experienced riders had rear windshields or panels in their rides also--they said it further reduced the dust. I believe it as after riding with them for two days we had way more dust in the cabin. One had a Tusk brand rear panel/window for his S that is just like what you describe. He also had a 1/2 windshield and his ride had the least dust accumulate in the cab. Good thing about the Tusk is that it is less than $50!

Hope this helps.

Cool info! Thanks. Pretty much goes along with what I was told by a guy out on Four Peaks Road. I saw a group and the lead guy was running a half windshield, so I waved him down and played 20 questions. He's the one that convinced me that it was the right way to go. Now I just need to dial it all in.

Interesting on the lower edge sealing. Makes me wonder what I'll see with the dash board I just made, as it sits fairly close to the windshield. I wonder if it will hinder air flow and cause a low pressure area that creates turbulence?

I have a gap along the lower edge of the windshield - it didn't come with any sort of seal. I may have to rig something up to keep it from flexing or flapping in the middle. Time will tell.

I'll have to take a look at the Tusk panel and see if it's something I can adapt to my cage. Sometimes, there are drawbacks to making your own stuff - everyone else's stuff doesn't fit! Oh well. :)

Quartzite, eh? Never done any off roading there, but have been through it many, many times. It amazed me back in 1999 when I saw it for the first time right around the beginning of February. Come over the hill and suddenly there are more RVs just parked out in the desert than I've ever seen in my life! Little community after little community of campers. Pretty cool.

Once I get moved to Scottsdale (next June), I'll be exploring everywhere out there. First thing is to map out a trip from Scottsdale to Sedona and/or Flagstaff all off road. I know it can be done!

I don't know about the dust. Haven't ridden on any groups yet. But for the half windshield, I just got one a few weeks ago. I too got tired of the wind straight in my face. I can now ride 55 down the road and not even feel the wind ( as long as there's no cross wind), in the video you can see I don't even worry about losing my hat. Without the WS I couldn't do 15mph without my hat wanting to take off.

Hey K-fab,

When it gets close to the move to Scottsdale, check back in with us. There are literally thousands of miles of trails between Scottsdale and Prescott/Sedona/Flagstaff to explore. I have been in Prescott for 3.5 yrs and between the Jeep and the Rzr, we have just scratched the surface. Summer riding in the Mountains and winter in the desert!! We can set you up with more riding than you can do in a loooonnnnggg time.

Cheers,

I run the 1/2 windshield and after I added the polaris rear panel, it helped a bunch with the dust. If I put in full windshield get way more dust than the 1/2 with or without rear panel. One thing I have noticed is that I have to remove rear panel to tow or it tries to come out at higher road speeds. I have the Polaris Lock & Ride 1/2 shield & can move it up or down a little to adjust the air flow in cab depending on the temp (or rain):ride:

I use half windshield when it's cold and typically take it off in summer. It was hot in the rzr otherwise. Dust isn't too bad in Ohio but in WV it is, but we are down there when its summer.

We run the half windshield in the winter, when it's snow on the ground and we need every little bit of wind protection.

As soon as the trails are dry enough, it comes off. When we first attached it last summer we watched how the dust from the front wheels was sucked in the sides of the cockpit. Since we were getting far more dust accumulation (than our friends without the half windscreen), off it came, and the problem stopped.

Haven't tried a back windscreen - just went the simple route and took it off.

All the best, James
