I just use my iphone on a steering wheel bracket. I use the Polaris Ride Command app but looking for an alternative since they have made some changes that I don't care for. I used to be able to plot rides out on my computer then upload them to the app. I can still do this with a work around but its a pain. I heard the Scenic Map app was a good one that I will be testing soon. Here are a couple pics of the bracket and phone setup. Its on a magnetic mount that makes the phone easily removable but stays put even on rough trails and very visible while riding. Hope this helps.

Sorry for the delay. It's been a busy couple of weeks for me. So to answer your questions:

Yes, this location is very easy to see while riding. I can look down right through the steering wheel and see where I am on the route. The mount I used was from Axia Alloys. They actually make a steering wheel mount and device holder. I did a lot of research as I was looking for the best alternative for NAV but didn't really want to buy another device. I also didn't want to have to strap or screw down my phone every time I wanted to use it as a NAV. This solution is perfect for me because the magnetic mount (Mob Armor) allows me to easily and quickly remove my phone if necessary to take a picture of wildlife or scenery on the fly but still keep it very secure even in rough terrain. Very happy with the results and thanks for the compliments!

Very late getting into this discussion...but if you're still looking for a Garmin GPS...

I have two of the Garmin Rino655t units.

Not the biggest screen....but

Its the only GPS I know of that you can start and stop tracks to save information on trails...by the trail.

Its an excellent geo-tagging digital camera.

It a radio.

Its a texting device.

And a whole lot more functionality I haven't even used yet.

So perhaps a tablet or phone to see where you're going...but a rino to record and save that information.

Just my thoughts,

Pirate

Sygic for a phone(can download each state or province at will) and I love my Polaris Interactive Digital Display... better then any garmin IMHO. Waterproof and has Speedometer, Odometer, Dual Tripmeters, Tachometer, Coolant Temperature, Volt Meter, Hour Meter, Service Reminder, Clock, Gear Indicator, Fuel Gauge, Seatbelt Reminder, Compass, Elevation, Latitude/Longitude, Route Rec among other things. I love the fact it draws a black line while you are riding so if you ever get lost you can just follow the black line back.

I picked the Garmin Montana 600 series because it fits nicely on my snowmobile. This series has an excellent mount available http://amzn.to/2sjx1xv. I have this mount installed on both sled and SxS....works awesome.

Its a powered mount so you never have to recharge the battery. Push a button and the GPS pops right off if you are parked at a hotel or something.

I have been using a Garmin 5" and now a 6" in a water resist case. I have the card from GPS Trailmasters and it works great. Love being able to make more loops or give you confidence to know how close to the same trail you were on or near a road. Also has gas stations pop up on it. No complaints, and $100 gets you a nice Garmin and I take it out and use it in that car.
