Gas Cap retainer?

My friends (let’s just call them the Wallace’s for anonymity). Anyway they are repeatedly forgetting to reinstall the gas cap after fueling. Do y’all know of any good solutions to keeping the cap attached? Like a retaining ring or something.

Might get a fancy chrome one and place it in the seat or on dash so it is very easy to spot. Or take the key and place in upside down cap in seat or dash. Can't start without key so cap gets replaced to retrieve key. Have good luck remembering it by placing on the dash. Floor is the worst possible place to lay it. Will lead to forgetting a lot.

Looked at the instructions, says to use a small chain. DON'T THINK SO. Would not want any kind of metal in all those gas fumes. Static electricity is not to be taking lightly.

So, use the cord like it also says to use.

BTW, I see vehicles every day (literally) that have chains for a gas cap tether. Never have had an issue. The vehicles are 30 years old.

30 years ago they never heard of cell phones causing explosions at gas pumps. 30 years ago they used metal gas cans as well AND you could fill them setting in the back of a pickup. Now they make you set them on the ground so they are groiunded so static electricity is not an issue. Now the fuel cells on RV have a grounding wire and clamp. Maybe our gas is different.

Well there are different ways to tether a gas cap to a vehicle. Some may be better than others. I am going to use a non metallic cord for mine. (boot shoe lace) Static has no bearing on using it. Had it laying around the house. Probably wouldn't use chain even if I had it. Noise, rattle, etc. As long as it keeps the gas cap from disappearing, all is good!

Better be careful in checking that it fits. Our RS1 has one also but it is a different number.

Here is my low budget tether. Yes, the cord twists some when removing or installing the cap. Not a big deal to me. I have plenty of cord (shoe lace) left to replace damaged cord or if I need to re-engineer the tether. The cap also sits in the door opening so door cant be closed.

If anyone is interested in chain style tethers, they are ball type chains and are used mostly on boats. The chains are available by themselves for gas caps. Google "gas cap chains".
