Hello kinda new to this forum, I bought a 2009 rzr new about six months ago and I busted the front sprague which is not uncommon I put a holz racing carrier in it and still have excessive noise coming from the carrier when put under a load, four wheel drive works but seems to slip. Any answers for me and another ? anyway to eliminate the polaris diff. for something else out of another sxs? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Only way to eleiminate is to pull diff and drive shaft but leave inner hubs so wheels stay on!!!

Did u check for missing teeth? Any trash in diff... From old sprague? Is ur backlash setup properly? Is ur pinion loose?

Just a few things to check on.

I am in same exact boat as him. same story product exactly.

It is a racheting sound and the front wheels just sit still as it rachets, only does this under severe load.

Ive had my diff apart multiple times to check and see if holz cage is bad and its always good.

I have 12 volts at connector

and the correct ohms in diff.

how do you tell if armature plate is bad?

Thanks Mike

I have the aluminum sprague and Im all to familiar with that "ratcheting" sound, but for me, it was my outer cv joints slipping every time...you can hear it in the begining of this video.

when i have my diff apart i take the inner hubs and put them together and there is mad slop between the 2. when its all together i can grab upper cvs and move up down left and right and the movement comes from in the diff.

So the hubs having this play between them could cause the problem? polaris told me there was no tolerance for the amount of play between the 2.

I love the holz cage best purchase yet just wished the awd worked under load.

Same thing here. Just replaced with brand new diff and same exact noise in the same exact situations. I'm sure the noise I hear and feel is coming from the diff. I also have the Holz Sprague. The sprague was undamaged when the diff let go. I did not re use the sprague on the new diff I replaced it just to be thorough.

When I blew the original diff it broke the armature which in turn ruined the ring and pinion.

The only thing I can come up with is the extreme load over comes the rollers in the sprague and forces them back into the cage.....????

I suppose this will happen to my new diff as well.

The gas cap ratcheting sound only happens under a load or when the front wheels spin freely and then suddenly get traction. I would think if this is happening with a new diff that all rzr's would do this????

Do they..... anyone?

Hmmm..... mine is a 2009 or 2010 diff.

Maybe others will have some input.

I can get mine to make this ratcheting noise easily. I have a creek bed that has a 3 foot vertical step up. Its easy to high center the rzr on it when trying to crawl up it slowly. It gets to a point where the rear will push it up and the front will spin then grab. As soon as the front grabs I get the ratcheting sound. Its more than just a sound you can really feel it in the drive train.

To me it does not seem like that much stress on the diff though. Its not the entire weight of the machine its just stopping the rotation quickly.
