You don't mention it, but if you haven't tried PB blaster or another penetrating oil, its definitely worth trying. It made a night and day difference with my stuck axle. I fought with it for 2-3hrs with a slide hammer, barely budged it. Used some PB Blaster, waited 10mins and it came out with the next 5 hits with the slide hammer.

I do but in my experience it doesn’t help much with removal if it’s been awhile and you are in mud/water somewhat. The splines still rust and there’s generally no trace of what I put on after let’s say 1700 miles. I just had to slide hammer my fronts out for the second time. Again just my experience and I’m conservative with how much I put on but I do put it on hoping it somewhat extends the axle spline life.

I spray mine with PB Blaster once a month or so, just incase I need to change on the trail. It works good, I can remove by hand. I have used that trick many times on "stuck" axles. Don't forget to push them in also. By working that ring back and forth, it will start to free up and clean the gunk out from under it.

I also have an "axle magic" slide hammer, but only used it once or twice.

I just wonder how many curse words have been said due to stuck axles. I know I’ve had my share over the years. …..And it’s all because the groove and/or c-clip gets corroded and the clip can’t compress to free the axle. So yes to any penetrating oil to break up and flush out the groove on removal and yes to grease or anti seize on install.
