The Good, The Bad

Well, we just got back from the Dunes at Eureka last night. I finally got to give the RZR a good trial, this is the good and bad in a nut shell. The good points were far more than the bad, but I'll list the bad first. Many of my complaints have already been posted on this site.

The Good

1. The clutch seemed to work pretty well. It engages smoothly and seems to shift up and down about where it I like it to. About the only change I might make would be to lower the low speed engine RPMs.
2. The heater worked very well, kept our legs warm when it was 35 degrees and windy. I imagine with the cab on it will provide more than enough heat.
3. The Razor seemed very stable at higher speeds, especially on asphalt. I didn’t get over 48 mph, buy it was stable and easy steer at that speed. I don’t think it would do much over 50 to be honest.
4. Side hills were easier than I had anticipated. I was on some pretty steep inclines and it never did feel tippy.
5. The brakes are awesome. This wheeler needs good brakes to make up for the lacking engine braking, and they fit the bill easily.
6. The seats were very comfortable and I had no complaints about comfort.
No Hi/Low beams on lights. Every vehicle we met on asphalt was flashing his lights, but I have the HID lights and did not lower the beams initially.

Bad
1. The exhaust was far too loud for my liking, everyone that rode with me agreed. My ears are still ringing.
2. Not as fast as I had hoped, but it will be OK for me because I don't race. I hope nobody has expectations of a formula 1 dragster. My buddy on my Honda Rubicon 500 with nearly bald tires stayed with me in all 3 drag races in sand up to 45 MPH. My 27" tires are probably the biggest culprit.
3. Dust.....Oh My Goodness! This was by far my biggest complaint. We noticed that the dust rolled in the sides from the front tires something awful. I had to keep wiping off the instruments so I could see them. Steve stayed clean on the Rubicon compared to me in the RZR. I see myself putting half doors on right away to help cure this big problem. I'll fab them myself and install race car latches. We will be offering a lightweight and functional half door kit soon to eliminate the nets and stop most of the dust. The dust also bellowed up from behind in the whirlwind effect that has been mentioned on this site. We will also offer a simple and inexpensive fix for that soon.
4. Annoying rattling passenger handle, I had to finally take it off and store the thing. It would be nice if Polaris would have installed QuickLock adjusters to both speed adjustments and eliminate the annoying rattles. I thought it was terrible, so loud you could hear it over the noisy muffler.
5. Under steering, front end washing out on corners, especially going up hill. That may change once I get my winch on and add a little more weight in the front.
6. The stock seat belts are nearly useless. We saw the passenger side belt fail after 15 minutes. It wouldn’t retract no matter what we did. Part of the time it wouldn’t release. Polaris owes us a decent seat belt instead of these Chinese mis-fits.
7. Throttle was a little wild and uncontrollable in rough stuff. It wasn’t as bad as I expected, and I will come up with my own fix. I will throw it out there to a couple of other engineers I work with. I’m a mechanical engineer and we deal a lot with similar problems, a combination of ergonomic and geometric flaws that need corrected. A sponge under the pedal is a band aid. What happens when it’s cold and the sponge freezes?
8. Fuel Mileage wasn’t great, about 3 gallons in 36 miles, 12 MPG, but it was all on sand and I was breaking it in….on and off throttle a lot. I got 12 MPG with my Silverado pulling an 8000 pound Toy Hauler.

This may sound like a lot of negative, but remember the good points are way too far to list. The fun factor of this machine is far better for me than UI have had on any ATV. All in all, with a few fairly easy mods, I think this is going to be one fun machine.

The reason the front end understeers when going uphill, is because ALL of the weight is in the back of the unit when accelerating, and especially when climbing. Not the units fault, any vehicle is like that, especially on sand!

That mileage isn't too bad considering a new engine, on sand all day!

Get 4-point seat belts, and don't look back... it makes you feel about 10x safer...

Bring electrical tape with you, and give the passenger handle a good 3-4 wraps around the bar and pin, and it rattles much less!

I'm glad I'm not a manufacturer for the simple fact you just can't please everybody all the time.
I have an entire different set of dislikes and almost all of the items that bother you, I've never even paid attention too. LOL
The great thing about this board is hearing what others do and don't like about their RZR.
The bottom line usually seems to be they LOVE their RZR for its strong points and don't worry about or corrcet what bothers them.
Thanks for the post arzeear

I just got back from my first major ride and have to say the only thing I was disappointed with was the stock lighting... Maybe I had really low expectations regarding the suspension but it performs better than I anticipated. I was practically wide open the entire way back from the sand drags down sand highway at Glamis through decent woops and having a blast. I was passing quads and some bikes.

I do agree that t-bar does rattle when you don’t have a passenger. I thought the db level of the exhaust was good and it handled great through the dunes - it goes anywhere. I did notice at 50+mph down the washes or sand straits with lots of tire grooves from rails or whatever, that it pulled side to side a bit, but I thought it was fun. Then again I made my buddy have a panic attack (he made me take him back to camp –wuss) on the way to hill 5 and my wife cry so maybe I just like how bad ass this thing is at top speeds... =)

The rear suspension did bottom sometimes, but I had a really heavy cooler and hit stuff pretty fast…probably just needs stiffer springs or something. I say it far exceeded my expectations all the way around…except lights.

lol. I think my buddy was crying too...but he had his helmet on so I couldn't confirm, and I unfortunately didn’t have time to break out the camera for a blackmail opportunity photo before my buddy composed himself. =)

My goal is to make sure all my friends wont ever ride with me again. My wife has to no matter what so I can make her cry all I want. lol =)

LOL Chips, shame on you for scaring your buddy. Give him some blinds next time and strap him in good.

I'll state again that I love this machine and some of the things I'll be correcting on my Razor don't neccesarily bother others. To each his own, and after all, this forum like all the others, is to find ways to make this awsome machine even better. Nobody has to follow anyone's advice as to how you set up your Razor. I for one appreciate others posting dislikes and ways to improve on them. I have already fixed a few small glitches from reading on here. I appreciate others sharing their fixes on this site for others who may want to do the same. I don't look at the complaints here as a put down, but rather someone looking for help in fixing the little things that bother them. In short, I love this site and I love my Razor, and if I think I might get ideas from someone willing to share I will. If I come up with fixes for problems, I'll share them also, and those who don't want to read it can just ignore it. Thanks

Ya, different people will find different problems based on riding style and use, thats what’s great. I for one found out after a few hours that flipping your stock tires around in hopes to create a "paddle" like tread is a total waste of time. I wish I would have read a few forums before trying it out... Also, I have the lock and ride extra frame thing, and although it works fine for what I need it for, it does seem a bit flimsy.... But again, overall the rzr really is amazing.

One other thing I did notice now that I think about it, near the end of the weekend was the rzr was having a hard time finding “P” and “H”…sometimes grinding gears a bit before it would engage and requiring a bit of force to get it into “P”…

yes to each his own but arzeear drive a rhino then you will see just how fast the rzr is and you did bring up something that nobody has talked about and i agree..... why is their no low/high beams everything off road i have has them this is the first thing i have seen that didnt have both...lol i wonder why? and as to the ex noise i thought it was quiet stock....lol no drive mine with the lte duels their about 20 times louder..... but man do they look cool... the clutch... i do have to say the stock clutch works real good for a stocker..... the oh shit bar to be truth full ive never noticed if it makes noise...lol but as rzrider said we all will have are own good and bad list and post 100 of them and their will be 100 diff list alot of it depends on your riding type and area in sand i stay clean now dust dirty dirty dirty.... so many things afect your ride elevation tep tire size weight and tons more but no mater what the good bad and ugly is i still love my rzr and you will have to kill me and pry it out of my hands.....lol hey mayby we should start a thread what do you like and dislike and compare? but on a friendly terms no bashing or name calling just a way to see what we like and dont? and as a side what have you done to change what you dont like it might help otheirs do some tweking on their ride....just a thought? john. oh i forgot scaring your friends and family is priceless!!!!

Thanks Johnny Cat. I wasn't complaining about speed on my RZR because as I stated in my post, I don't race and don't care if it doesn't do 80 mph. My Rubicons are pretty fast stock. Most of my riding will be tooling down trails and just enjoying the outdoors. I'm past the "Gotta be the fastest" stuff. I will be coming up with some great fixes for some of the things that bother me and I will make them available for anyone that wants to improve their RZR.
As far as the lights go, I will be on asphalt part time and plan on riding it to work when I get the cab on, so what I will do is install some halogen driving ligts as low beams on a seperate switch, and on the highway for courtesy I will run just the driving lights pointed low. These HIDs are just incredibly bright. Every vehicle I meet flashes at me.

I can tell you from experience that with stock size tires the RZR will walk away from a Rincon in a drag, let a lone a lowly Rubicon.

They must have loosened the tolerances on the passenger bar as my first generation is too tight if anything and requires some force to adjust in and out after 9 months.

As others have already stated, it's all about how you use your RZR. For example, you have issues with no low beams on your lights, I'm deep in the woods and never see a sole. I run HIDs and PIAAs and the woods glow and I've never had a deer or moose flash a thing at me :)

Nother noob here.

Thanks, ARZEEAR for starting this thread. I was just thinking about how our ride was last weekend and what I noticed about the rzr..

I've noticed this is one of the more friendly open forums.
I really look forward to the way some folks come up with ideas to mod this or fix that... I'm glad you folks and this forum are here. I have caught myself chuckling over ideas I've seen in my short time here already that I would not likely thought of...

my 2cnts...
As for speed, I to think it is plenty quick enough, as stock, for the way I use it. But can see why others may want more.. I will use it mostly in the pasture or on 4 wheeler trails.

Turning is tight at times though.
We took ours out to the ridge (The Ridge Riding Club, Motorcycle and ATV Off-Road Riding Facility) her in bama last Sunday and I new going in it would be tight in spots and some of the turns I would have to back up. Or goose it and kick the tail around... Prefer to goose... especially when I have passenger... When the tree is on their side... ;-)

I find it interesting how many folks complain about the stock lights. I see fine with them over all. Rode with them in the pasture late Sat night in the fog and mist no problem. Plus I usually prefer amber light to the super white light of HID. To me white glares back to much. But with less than 10hrs I may just change me mind down the road... :) Been known to happen...

Nor did I give a second thought to the lack of high/low for the light's till I read it a moment ago. That would be nice but ah well...

I did notice the rattle of the oh' crap handle. But once it registered as a non problem I ignored it... I would like a different adjustment set up for raising and lowering it though. Just not sure what... yet

I was laughing at my wifes sister while she was braving along for a ride... Noticed she was twisting on the grab bar... When I asked her about the ride after ward. Said she whish'd the oh crap handle would turn some. So she could at least pretend she had some control as a tree comes flashing by... or as I goosed it to kick the tail around for a tight turn. Got the same from the wife and our pal Mike...

As for the loudness. Well I suppose it could be more quite. But I'm comparing it to my scrambler 400 4x4 with after market pipe... So... it's not so loud to me...

Enjoyed the shocked of each of my passengers. When I went through a knee deep lil bog about 30' long of clay and mud in 2 wheel high with out missing a beat.. That and on my second trip on this trail with Mike. The look on the fellows face in the next lil bog around the next couple bends. I had to stop and wait while he freed his 4 wheeler from the tree he had slid against/behind, in the knee deep mud. Then had to really get on it to get out.

I slid also, thanks to his ruts to the same tree. But where he had to get off and play in the mud... I just smiled, dropped it in reverse and backed up a bit, cut the wheel, hit 2 high and slipped right out...
What makes it great to me is I'm just a casual off road'r... and by no means an expert. Still, I love when my ride make me look good though...

Over all I'm very pleased so far with our RZR... I'm sure I'll find some things on this site to do/try..

Such as: a skid plate asap (make or buy, we'll see) and some fender flares. Then some tunes... I really like the full bore(?) hood also... Then there is the bench seat for three...

Thanks all for you post and letting me join in...
