The Good, The Bad
Well, we just got back from the Dunes at Eureka last night. I finally got to give the RZR a good trial, this is the good and bad in a nut shell. The good points were far more than the bad, but I'll list the bad first. Many of my complaints have already been posted on this site.
The Good
1. The clutch seemed to work pretty well. It engages smoothly and seems to shift up and down about where it I like it to. About the only change I might make would be to lower the low speed engine RPMs.
2. The heater worked very well, kept our legs warm when it was 35 degrees and windy. I imagine with the cab on it will provide more than enough heat.
3. The Razor seemed very stable at higher speeds, especially on asphalt. I didn’t get over 48 mph, buy it was stable and easy steer at that speed. I don’t think it would do much over 50 to be honest.
4. Side hills were easier than I had anticipated. I was on some pretty steep inclines and it never did feel tippy.
5. The brakes are awesome. This wheeler needs good brakes to make up for the lacking engine braking, and they fit the bill easily.
6. The seats were very comfortable and I had no complaints about comfort.
No Hi/Low beams on lights. Every vehicle we met on asphalt was flashing his lights, but I have the HID lights and did not lower the beams initially.
Bad
1. The exhaust was far too loud for my liking, everyone that rode with me agreed. My ears are still ringing.
2. Not as fast as I had hoped, but it will be OK for me because I don't race. I hope nobody has expectations of a formula 1 dragster. My buddy on my Honda Rubicon 500 with nearly bald tires stayed with me in all 3 drag races in sand up to 45 MPH. My 27" tires are probably the biggest culprit.
3. Dust.....Oh My Goodness! This was by far my biggest complaint. We noticed that the dust rolled in the sides from the front tires something awful. I had to keep wiping off the instruments so I could see them. Steve stayed clean on the Rubicon compared to me in the RZR. I see myself putting half doors on right away to help cure this big problem. I'll fab them myself and install race car latches. We will be offering a lightweight and functional half door kit soon to eliminate the nets and stop most of the dust. The dust also bellowed up from behind in the whirlwind effect that has been mentioned on this site. We will also offer a simple and inexpensive fix for that soon.
4. Annoying rattling passenger handle, I had to finally take it off and store the thing. It would be nice if Polaris would have installed QuickLock adjusters to both speed adjustments and eliminate the annoying rattles. I thought it was terrible, so loud you could hear it over the noisy muffler.
5. Under steering, front end washing out on corners, especially going up hill. That may change once I get my winch on and add a little more weight in the front.
6. The stock seat belts are nearly useless. We saw the passenger side belt fail after 15 minutes. It wouldn’t retract no matter what we did. Part of the time it wouldn’t release. Polaris owes us a decent seat belt instead of these Chinese mis-fits.
7. Throttle was a little wild and uncontrollable in rough stuff. It wasn’t as bad as I expected, and I will come up with my own fix. I will throw it out there to a couple of other engineers I work with. I’m a mechanical engineer and we deal a lot with similar problems, a combination of ergonomic and geometric flaws that need corrected. A sponge under the pedal is a band aid. What happens when it’s cold and the sponge freezes?
8. Fuel Mileage wasn’t great, about 3 gallons in 36 miles, 12 MPG, but it was all on sand and I was breaking it in….on and off throttle a lot. I got 12 MPG with my Silverado pulling an 8000 pound Toy Hauler.
This may sound like a lot of negative, but remember the good points are way too far to list. The fun factor of this machine is far better for me than UI have had on any ATV. All in all, with a few fairly easy mods, I think this is going to be one fun machine.
