Engine Noise from Valve Cover

I just finished doing pinion nut repair on my 2012 RZR 800, replaced all the wheel bearings and put on new tie rod ends, and before I re-install the bed I wanted to complete a few other items.
My unit has 250 hours and about 1500 miles and I bought it one month ago.

I wrapped the exhaust pipe with DEI exhaust wrap from the headers to the muffler.
I replaced the existing spark plugs with NGK BKR7EIX Iridium plugs.
I pulled the Pressure Relief Valve, it was clean, buffed the pin with Scotch Brite and reinstalled with the chamfered end of the dowel pin down.

I started up the engine with the panel over the CV belts off and the bed is off. I didn't notice this before, but there's more noise than I remember coming from the engine.
At idle, I put a long screw driver to my ear and I can hear the valves, they're loud, but it's not pecking, and I hear the sound from other areas of the engine, but not as loud.
Is this normal for this engine ?
I had a '93 Jeep Cherokee that had the 4.0 liter straight six and the top of that engine sounded like a loud sewing machine.

I just want to be sure I don't have a problem before I start trail riding. I'd hate to pull the valve cover, but thought about removing the assembly, that has the hose going to the air filter canister, on the valve cover to see if I could see oil getting up there.

Any advice ? Thanks

I think If I were you I would start by taking air filter out and swabbing the throttle body with clean rag and/or inspecting with flashlight. Any dirt would indicate air filtration problems and possibly the dreaded "Dusting" as the boys here on the forum so delicately put it.I had the identical symptoms as you. I thought It might have been valves or even maybe drive clutch.Once the ticking began It lasted about 25 miles, became progressively louder, and then boom.....rod through crankcase. Hopefully this isnt the case with yours but If you get in front of it and it is the problem then a rebuild will be much cheaper. I ended up putting in a reman longblock. Lots of dough but an interesting experience.Needless to say I upgraded and relocated my air intake system to the bed area with a donaldson filter in a UMP canister. If the throttle body is clean then maybe someone else on here can help as I haven't any experience with valve work.Good luck.

Thanks guys,
I pulled the out the PRV assy yesterday, very clean with oil on it. I buffed the dowel with a scotch brite pad and put it back in chamfered end down.
I'll check the air intake and throttle body today.
I guess I'll have to pull the valve cover, check for oil flow. Some YouTube videos complain about the cheap Polaris lifters. Hopefully the problem will be obvious and easy to fix.

I know my wife is wondering when I'll get done so she can have her parking space back in the garage. It's been cold here in WNC after having a heat wave two weeks ago.

I just finished a complete rebuild with new a new cam, lifters, crank, cylinder, pistons and also had the head worked over.

I was surprised at how noisy the valve train is and with the bed and back cover off its even louder. Without hearing it I would say it's normal.

I was going to say sort of the same thing, these motors are not all that quiet, they make a lot of noise compared to most of the other motors I have. the design is really kind of dumb. It's like a tie for stupid motor design between this and my Harley...Harley has like 110,000 miles on it so although I think it's stupid it seems to work well and this RZR works good too.

Thanks for the comments.
I removed the "flange" from the top of the valve cover, I'll call it the PCV, but it actually is a reed valve. I couldn't see much down in the valve cover so I gently stuck a screw driver down in there and it came out with almost an inch of clean oil on it. So I'm assuming that oil is getting up to the valve. Comments from DMY and rhino89523 about the noisy engine has calmed my concern that I had a problem. I also found the slit in the rubber hose going over to the air filter canister, which is done at the factory according to another post on this forum.

My heat shields from DEI arrived today, one for under the bed and one for in between the exhaust manifold and the passenger seat, and an extra sheet to put on the panel over the CV belt area and maybe on partially around the air filter canister. I also ordered a couple parts for the coolant system that was recommended: Temperature sensor, thermostat, aluminum water pump impeller, and seals - as a preventative measure.
