My dealer suggested changing out the secondary clutch, clutch spring, and helix to a 2008/2009 RZR set up for much better engine braking....

So I did it...

Makes you kind of miffed that Polaris ever quit putting this clutch set up on in the 2010 and on models. Maybe even kind of pissed.

Anybody else done this? The engine brake is awesome, what could be the draw backs??

Thats one thing I miss from the old Rhino...How much better was it?
Reminded me the last time I was on a good quad, almost have to give it gas to get down the hill....

It is cheaper to cast the Helix right into the secondary clutch for Polaris. I changed out my 2012 570 secondary clutch to the Team secondary clutch. The engine braking is much better on the team clutch and the engagement is also smoother.

One ever so slightly drawback. On long steep decents you will have to learn to brake and slightly keep the idle up high to keep the engine brake engaged, otherwise it will kick out and you will freewheel again. And if that happens and you don't come to a good stop and let it engage again with some throttle you will throw you and your rider into a strong forward motion, like hitting the brakes hard! LOL But it is a easy task to learn. Sure saves on Brake Pads!

Yup, that is exactly how it operated, you still have to keep the clutch engaged, but it works ten times better than the run away clutch it came with. Kind of reminded me of driving my old, old landcruiser in the mountains in low range, throw you forward, rock you back!

Loved it on the downhills, much easier for everybody to operate in my tribe.

You've got half the battle solved...now if only you could get the damn 4x4 to engage (the front wheels) on downhills. I've watched Polaris quads spin on steep downhills or ice covered hills when the rears locked up due to engine braking...but the fronts were just along for the ride. No other machines have these problems.

What did it cost to do this mod? Even with just the rears, I might give it a go. I'm not sure how long my brake pads are going to last in the mountains.

I think when driving down steep or slick hills one might have to actually give some throttle and drive it down, had a bit of that happen on steep grade and loose trail, simply tapped the accelerator a bit to keep it straight.

The secondary clutch was in effect $250. clutch spring $80, helix $80 and an hour labor to install. Well worth it to me.

Saw this on the polaris website. Makes you wonder if they went back or came up with new? Its not listed in the Polaris parts yet.

That's what is on mine. Love the way it creeps down a hill.
Can't wait to try it out in Colorado!

Just purchased a team secondary clutch with a one way bearing on the drive clutch along with a spacer and the machine will actually come to a stop going down a fairly steep incline. The Polaris part numbers are as follows. Clutch 1322707 $395, Bearing 1520836 $153, Spacer 5632060 $9 . This is a great mod and it works!!

I have a 2010 LE, and I like being able to enable the engine breaking or having it disengaged on steep PA hills (North Central PA). On steep hills, if I want engine breaking, I just tap the gas and it engages. Other times, I like that it disengages. Neither is a one size fits all situation, but I don't mind it much. Often we are on icy/snowy descents, so I like to be able to control that myself to prevent skidding and ending up in a slide. It's gets pretty hairy sometimes.

I have a 13 LE and it operates exactly as you say, at idle it free wheels and if you tap the gas It will throw you forward when it engages If you tap the has while in motion

I want to look into this, are these OEM parts from Polaris? What do you mean by Team?

OK i found all the parts. Is there a down side to this clutch in a newer RZR? Why did they get away from the engin braking?

The blue le I drove had eB of coarse. I was gunho on getting a machine with it until I drove one. I did not like the machine throwing me through the windshield when I let off the gas. It doesn't sound like that big a deal until you are going above 30 mph and let off all at once. I like to have a little more controll than that, expesually on a slick surface.

Goose, that's interesting I don't think mine does that, but then again I have Dragon Fire belts in it that you can't move forward if you try (which is a pain in you leave your gloves on the dash and buckle up) but I don't notice a quick thrust forward. I do have the heavy spring and heavy pedal upgrade on mine, cause I hated the jerky ness in tight corners and tight woods riding. Made a BIG difference. A cheap upgrade, and easy install. Well worth it. You don't slap your foot on the pedal and hit the gas or vice versa.
