Dune riding

Friends of mine want to plan a trip for out west this year and do some dune riding. Personally I don't get very exciting thinking about it. I guess I just don't get it and since most of you on here seem to be from the Western part of the country and do a lot of dune riding I would like to here from you.

I have always rode tight tactical trails, usually with a lot of mud, bumps, ruts and steep hill climbs. I have never rode on sand in my life. A big open area just to drive around seems like it would be super boring??? There has to be more to it, or is it just we ride where we can, and we have fun doing it no matter the terrain? I just dont want to plan this big trip and find it uneventful.

Put it on your Bucket list Bud... I've done the trail riding, mountains and desert, rock climbing, Nothing (in my opinion) offers more driving than the dunes. You will use everything you have. Your 900 was built for this. I live close and go often... I'll know when your here when I hear the yelling and laughing...hehehe Have fun, but pay attention

Big open areas is a deceptive description. The areas I ride are big and open, but there is a lot of varied terrain. It is very technical riding, just at higher speeds.
I would suggest riding with someone who is experienced with the dunes. It will be a lot safer, and the fun factor will be a lot higher following someone who knows how to read the dunes.
Where on the west coast are you planning on visiting?

just wait until you drop ur XP9 in her element. riding dunes for me is like riding a rollercoaster. you got big hills and fast drop offs at a high rate off speed. if you have a good leader you'll have a blast. btw, bring goggles, sand gets everywhere.

u should have a great time, lot of fun and if you dont like the dunes the mountains are a hour away. if you or your friends have never been in the dunes, the first day I would get with someone there to ride with and show you how to read them. differnt type of riding. hope you come out

You mentioned coming out West. If you make it to Utah, check out Coral Pink Sand dunes. It consists of red sand and pine trees. There's a little open area and lots of trails. Then there's even more trails without sand if you like. Look it up on You Tube and other web sites. Not too far away, there is also Sand Hollow. Personally, I like Coral Pink Sand Dunes better, but Sand Hollow is scenic and unique in it's own way. Do both! Enjoy and be safe.

Yep, uneventful and super boring. Nothing to see here, move right along...

What are you guys thinking inviting this guy out to our dunes? There is a reason that the numbers reach in the six digits on big weekends, just so uneventful and boring, we don't need even more folks falling asleep at the wheel in our big open area.

Teasing bro, you cannot beat St. Anthony Idaho, Little Sahara Utah, or Glamis. Some of the funnest most intense riding you will find anywhere. Dumont isn't bad either but it's pretty small for the amount of folks that show up. Like others have said, find an experienced group, listen, learn, and enjoy. If you're coming to Glamis or Dumont you can expect triple digits temperatures from late March through October. Sometimes it holds out into April but have plenty of liquids on hand no matter what time of year you visit the desert, even when it's cold you will dehydrate.

Enjoy your visit and be safe.

I think we are talking about fall this year before we go. I am not sure where right now, other guys I ride with are making the plans. By no means was I degrading or down playing the riding skills it takes, just if its worth making the long trip to experience riding in the sand.....Thanks for all your comments

Glamis is an awesome place to go. I have been going for over 30 years and I have ridden anything from 3 wheelers, quads, buggies, to now side by sides. Everyone needs to try it at least once. Glamis sells itself.

If you are looking for any guidance I would recommend contacting Brent at Southern California Dune Tours - desert tours, off-road tours, 4x4 tours, glamis They will set you up and get you familiar with Glamis.

This coming from our good leader. Giving your self a pat on the back. I will give you one, thanks for all the great rides Dev your a good leader. You give us fun and kinda keep us safe.:scared2:

I have found the dunes to be the most technical of all the riding I have done. It can get down right scary at times. I love it.

GPS Tracks/WayPoints

Any chance you have a Garmin and would share some tracks and or waypoints? That would save me a bunch of time trying to use Google Maps and Mapsource. Thank in Advance thorne.parker@gmail.com

If you like trails, the Oregon dunes have plenty of them. The Oregon dunes go though trees, have trails etc. Some stuff you wont dare do that perhaps a quad can.

Do a search for Banshee hill at Winchester Bay...its a hill climb that you get swallowed up in the trees halfway up.

Also they are closing a lot of stuff at the Oregon dunes, so ride it while you got it...:rollfinger:

Clearly written by someone who has never ridden the dunes :rm_thumbdown:

I have yet to see a camera that can capture the sheer size of the hills and dunes! The dune hills came be like this,Put it flat to the floor and count to 20-30 before you reach the top! I also have ridden a lot of different places and terrain,Snow,Mud,Mountain's,etc... and I prefer the sand dunes.

I live in Colorado, ride in the mountains. Also love going to Moab Utah. But there is nothing like Glamis. Been there 5 times in three years. Plan on going next Thanksgiving. Needless to say We love it!! We meet friends that live out there, they are great dune leaders. I feel good leading in daylight but nighttime is where my favorite rides happen. You feel like Robbie Gordon in a mini desert truck. I have both the XP 900 and The Turbo S. The XP is more fun. The low end grunt is what makes the difference and the suspension in smoother.
