I called DDM about the connectors and they say they are "plug and play" as do my friends. But I see on the site that I have to switch wires around. Who is right?

Just did 2 sets yesterday. You do need to change the plugs

Do you insert the screwdriver into the space that is on the outside?

I used a stiff peace of wire like a paper clip to get the pins to release.

Yes, slide the screwdriver in on the outer side of the plug. That pushes the little prong out of the way so the plug can slip out.
