Crown King Ride Report - Lesson learned

Well this weekend I rode up to Crown King from Lake Pleasant for the first time.

Everything went great on the way to CK, we had a blast making our way up to the top. It was a perfect day for ridding with clear sky's and beautiful scenery.

It was on the way back when things took a turn for the worse....

About 5-6mi. out of CK I got a flat and didn't realize it in time, well I hit a big rock and broke my wheel!!! And of course I didn't have a spare tire, I had a patch kit and air compressor only. We drove her ALL the way back to lake pleasant on a flat/broken wheel.

Not having a spare and no back up plan to get us a spare on the trail we decided to try stuffing the tire with grass and branches to build body and hope it helps keep the tire on the wheel. We stopped and re-stuffed every little bit! knowing the grass and branches would only last so long we started to think we would have to spend the night out there if that tire came off and have someone bring us a spare the following day since it was getting late.

As we were driving, very slow, we noticed a foam seat cushion sitting on the side of road!!! This was our life saver!!!!! We cut up the seat and stuffed it into the tire, this got us most of the way back, I don't think we would have made it without the foam... As the foam started to get torn up and no longer holding it's shape we started stuffing with grass and branches again.

After 5hrs of driving and stuffing we made it back to the staging area! It could have been much worse, but instead now we have a great story to tell!!

Lesson learned: Carry a damn spare!! :rofl3:

Here are a couple of pics, this is how we drove all the way back.

Yup! we sure did! I learned my leasson that day and now carry a patch kit and air compressor, to bad that wasn't enough this time. I got ride of those tires and bought these Interco Reptile tires, they have been great with the exception of this flat. But I'm still very impressed by them being that it stayed on the wheel for the whole ride back!

Wow, you are lucky to make it back. Good job of thinking about it and doing the best you could with what you had to work with.

Make sure you change out the studs on that wheel. They most likely are damaged.

Many years ago I went to Roosevelt Lake to pick up my friends 30 foot toy hauler. He had to get his wife into town to the hospital. He told me he had a flat on his way to the lake. He didn't say he drove on it for a while. As I was rounding a corner in the rain the rear tire with the wheel came off and flew into the desert. Thank goodness the care behind me started flashing it's lights. I was surprised to find the wheel missing and all the lugs broken.

Fortunately a very nice man came out and told me I could park on his property. He even helped me get the lugs out. I drove into Payson for the parts and came back and fixed it. Never did find the tire/wheel. Good thing he had 2 spares.

I green slime my tires too, Discount hates it!

My story is about 2 years ago I took my handicapped sister on that ride to Crown King on a week day. Normally there is a lot of traffic but we only saw one person to about 1/2 way and then pop, the transmission broke and puked. So I bundled her up in the RZR (glad it was winter time) and had lots of food and drink and I started hiking, probably 30 miles or more. I only hiked about 100 yards and along came a guy on a raptor. He gave be a ride on the back. No where to hold on but the plastic fenders and he was sloshed drunk. The tires hit my knuckles several times. After a wild ride and assuming I was going to die we made it back to the staging area. I 4 wheeled my FJ pulling that trailer back up there and then back with the RZR on the trailer. Most of the time I was dragging the trailer on the frame. I made it back! The county should have paid me for grading the road...

What failed on the wheel? Smoothness of the bead to hold air, or more structural?

Thanks to you for sharing your experience. I now have a spare hanging off the rear! Got me to thinking... How many times would I be in deep Schmidt without a spare! I carry everything else including a sink. I do a lot of exploring alone (another dumb thing to do) and potential 20 mile+ walk would not be a good thing!

Back here in the eastern states if something breaks up front, we winch the broke rzr onto the back another one that will be doin the towing. Usually use a couple of ratchet straps to secure it and make our way back to camp. Can be tough to get up and down some nasty hills and such but usually gets it done.
