Check engine light and shifting

My 2008 rzr has a weird thing going on with the check engine light and shifting. When I put it it gear sometimes when I first start, mainly neutral, the N does not appear on the cluster. After a few seconds the check engine light comes on. When I put it into another gear and the indicator comes on then the check engine light will turn off. Has anyone ever had this happen? I also seem to be losing coolant somewhere. Not very much though. When I am on rides it does not overheat and the coolant will be the same level. When I park it for a couple days then check the overflow there will be a little less than when I stopped riding. I have not found any sign of leaks, and there is nothing coming from the weep hole. Any help would be great. Thanks. Could it just be air making its,way out of the system?

I don't have an answer for the CEL or shifting issue but for the coolant as the engine warms up and gets hot the coolant moves into the overflow tank. As I'm sure you've noticed on the tank is a hot / cold check line. Simple reason for these is that if you were to fill the tank completely it would blow the lid off once the coolant reached operating temp. The thermostat regulates how much coolant is an the engine all all times. Hope this helped

Did you change coolant or drain and refill the cooling system for any reason? These machines can take a while to get all of the air out of the system sometimes.
Whenever I refill mine I park it on ramps that I use to load into my truck, fill it up then crack the bleeder on the thermostat housing until there is no air then let it run a while on the ramps to get the air out. The first ride out I may need to add a little coolant but then after that it holds it's proper level. Read your manual on how to check the codes in your ECU for the other issue. It may be the gear selector switch on the transmission.

I had the same problem with my gear and check engine indicator. It was my wire harness in the center of the engine and the transmission. It is directly across from the starter. To confirm, turn key on,put transmission in neutral, reach in and move that wire around carefully while you watch the gauge. Keep this in mind, when the computer can not find the gears, it will give you you "check engine". So as you move that wire hardness around, you should see the gauge indicating what's happening. The part I be leave was $80.
It's only two screws that hold the wire harness unit to the transmission. However, some pins are spring loaded a bit as you pull it out of its place. Not sure if you want to chance it, or take to dealer. Good luck.

Justin,

If the coolant system is drained, or perhaps from the factory. It will have air in it.

To see if your coolant system does....

Raise the front of the RZR and set the front wheels on blocks about 8" tall. I use good 'ol cinder blocks.

Remove the radiator cap.

Fill the radiator up to just below the overflow tube spout.

Walk away for an hour or so.

Shake the RZR from the front fender areas just to get any air moving.

Is the coolant level a bit low? Top it off again.

Repeat the last three steps for eight hours or so...

Top off coolant the last time, put the radiator cap in place, fill the overflow bottle to the cold level.

Go ride!

Don't be surprised if you have to add to the overflow bottle after each of the next two or three rides. That's just the last bit of air being shaken out of the coolant system.

You'll then not have to add coolant again. Check the overflow bottle before every ride and keep the level correct.

That's how I've done it the last two times and it works every time!!!

Check your coolant level prior to riding (cold). Check it again after a bit of riding (hot). The expansion tank should have a higher level than cold (coolant will expand in your system as it heats up and flow into the expansion tank. After it cools down (coolant contracts) the system will siphon coolant out of the tank back in to the radiator. If you are not overheating, it sounds like it is working as designed.
