Broken studs

Yesterday I broke all the studs right rear wheel. Ruined the wheel, rotor, caliper, hub and bearing carrier. I think what happened was last weekend I had a flat that I changed in the field. Rode 10 miles slowly back to camp and noticed the lugs were not tight. Tightened them to specifications. I think riding even a short distance stressed the studs. 60 miles more of hard riding broke them. I know some of you think the specifications are too high.

These Maxwell studs are great ...

Yes, lugs nuts too loose will definitely damage the studs.

Damaged and weaker, then torqued to spec is bad.

When lugs are properly torqued, the studs are stretched some, to maintain clamping force. Stretching weakened studs will for sure result in breakage.

The torque is negotiable to an extent. The main issue is making sure they are torqued the same to prevent them from working loose.

I fee like the torque is too high for the size of stud they used, but I still torque mine to spec. I am not an engineer, so I defer to them on the issue.
