so back when we had are 07 ranger xp, we would find a big wide open place to let are kids drive with the ranger down in low gear so they could get the concept of the gas/brake/steering thing down, so now we moved up to the 900xp and still do the same but now my 14 year old girl drives so good, she can follow me all around in high gear threw the dunes and such'' just a short time ago, ive moved her into my truck for drive time on old abandon roads by my house and she's driving like she's been doing it for 50 years! when the day comes for her driving test, it will be nothing for her thanks to this early start with the UTV'S , so I say if the conditions are right and the surroundings are safe, hop in the pass seat and pull them utv,s down in low gear and get them kids started:ride: ps, I also spent 2 weeks riding double on a street bike ,letting my wife take the controls on straight roads to get the feel for the bike,, now as you can see in my picture up top, she rides it to work all summer long!

I believe they learn to be better and more responsible drivers as teens. They understand what happens when things go wrong and know they have to be smart behind the wheels. We did the same with our 3 daughters, now working on the grand boys. Smart parents I believe, that care about there children,s safety. Our state had a car full leave the highway and kill two on there way to high school. Going to fast trying to show off, I suspect.

I agree. My dad had me driving his truck well before I was old enough for a permit. Strange though I failed my driving test twice before getting my license, lol. Go figure!

I have a 5 year old son and a 6 year old grandson (yes chew on that)

My 5 year old is not quite there yet (had some heart issues when infant so hes a bit small and a little behind), but my grandson the 6 year old LOVES to sit in my lap when driving the Ace or the xp1000 and he can steer that sucker all day, keeps it right on the trail, now working on the "lines" he picks. Never had so much fun!!

As soon as he can reach the pedals the Ace is all his to mess around with, we have some property they can learn to drive on safely

I cant wait till they are both in Ace's!!!

We had our son and daughter start riding bike and our Hammerhead Twister 150 and our Carter Brothers GTR250 when they were 9 and 10 years old with one of us with them out at Octillio Wells. They learned quick what to look out for and what their limits were as well as all the safety stuff.

Right after we got the GTR 250 me and my daughter went for a ride and she drove and started to go up this really long somewhat steep hill and I stopped her. She was 10 years old. She looks at me and says don't worry dad I know what I"m doing, we will make it. OMG she was so cute when she said that I said ok lets try it. She turned around and got a little bit of a running start and we made up the hill with power to spare. I couldn't believe it. I ask her how she knew we would make. She said because I already did it before. I said really? With who? She said with mom. LMAO.

I found out later that the GTR 250 had a automatic low gear and it would climb just about anyhting.

Those smaller CC carts were perfect for teaching them how to ride in a SxS.

Yes teach your kids how to ride at younger ages. They listend to us more then. Especially about the safety factor and what to keep looking for when they are out riding. Especially on a crowded weekend.

They are in their early 20's now and when we go out together and they decide to take off in the RZR or their bike their mom and I start to stay what to look out for and they both cut us off and dictate exactly back to us what we taught them at 9 and 10 years old. LOL.

You gotta start them young and teach them. That being said, there is a great responsibility with the parent/guardian to teach them correctly and set a good example on how a machine should be operated. Kids are sponges...if you're out acting like a careless twit they're gonna pick up on that.

I started riding when i was 4. I rode nearly every day in the vegas desert since I was 8 til 18. I started driving out at the vegas motor speedway on the tracks when I was 12. I became a driving instructor on my 17th birthday for a company in las vegas. Had the opportunity to become a racing instructor when I turned 18.
It makes a difference. Start your kids young.

Health issues made that race instructor job disappear unfortunately. But it never stopped me from riding. My life revolves around cars, trucks, and off road.

Yesterday my wife and I took our rzr from Escalante Utah down the Hole in the rock trail that is about 65 miles and ends up at Lake Powell. We got a late start and was coming back at night and was about 20 miles from the paved road. A young couple were broke down in a small car, a front wheel was broke off! The road was rutted like a log road. Earlier on the trip starting out near the same area a woman had a similar break down with a car and a wrecker was hooking up as we went by. Last night it was pitch black, cold with a hard wind blasting sand in our faces like a shotgun as we drove. The young couple were from back east, Pittsburg, and wasnt sure what happened to their car. Their was next to no cell service but finaly they got through with a part of one bar showing. It was about 10 p.m. when we showed up there. We were only a couple miles from our parked rig so we went and loaded up, and went back to them. In the middle of leaveing to get our truck they were able to get 911 and have them call a wrecker. Bad things can and do happen if you arent trained somewhat in driving, mechanics etc especially in the boonies. That area is one of the most remote areas probley in the united states.

I agree with the OP as well.

My grandfather taught me how to drive his manual trans truck when I was around 9-10. I have put both of my girls on 50 quads, then graduating to a 200 and 250 quad as they got older. Taught them both how to drive our sxs's and then cars, well before the law allowed. I am glad I did this, as it has brought piece of mind for me and valuable experience for them.

When I see some of their peers drive, with their lack of experience behind the wheel, I am glad we approached this like we did!

nice to read all the great story's from you guys:clap: maybe sxs owners on here will remember this thread and pull over and teach there kids to drive when is safe to do so! like I said, pick a big wide open clearing and pull it in to low gear and get them rolling:eek:k: I remember set,n with the 07 ranger turned off and having them show me how they was going to remove there foot off the gas and apply the brake a few times before we started it:popcorn: then we moved on to turning there head to look before turning the wheel and so on. them were good times looking back now, now its just(DAD,, the rzr's out of gas):rollfinger: lol

I was 8 when I learned how to drive in a hayfeild(loaded). I was to little to throw 80lb bales so the task of moving the truck(78 f250 creeper gear). From my experance I put my kids in the rhino at about the same age to drive on grandpa's
farm. Now my boy is 19 and my daughter is 17 and both have a respect for driving. Last year we eent to silver lake dune park and I let her take the wheel of our jagged x. She peaked over a dune into a sink hole. She turned into the hole got on the gas and stopped. I was happy to see her keep her head and stop on a good place so I cold bail us out. It makes a differance!! Let them try they will supprise you:D

I've been riding quads and dirt bikes since i was 3-4 years old. I learned to drive around 10. i think teaching kids to drive properly when they are young makes all the difference. It also helps keep them interested in things other than cell phones and video games and is more likely them interested in the sport! When I have kids they'll be learning the ropes young!

so while kicking back in camp at glamis last week, I set up a tight parking simulation for my kid to practice backing into and parking in, her time is almost here for the driving permit test so what better way then practicing with the rzr''what a great learning tool these machines can be:clap: btw, she has no helmet on for this because im stepping her threw the reverse steering process and she's only moving at walking speed for the parking practice:eek:k: sorry for the sideways pics, not sure why there loading this way

We have only had our 1st RZR for 3 weeks now, and what a blast for all of us. One of the key reasons we decided we MUST get our RZR now is our 34 yo daughter who has been battling brain cancer for 8 years now cannot drive because of seizures and really misses it. She loved riding ATV's as a young teen and now just beems when riding with me or driving with me beside her.I am so happy it brings her such joy. She declared on Saturday when we got in from a ride how much she loves getting the dirt in her pores and teeth and she didn't realize how much she had missed it! :)

Now her 12 yo going on 29 daughter wants to drive and I am going to teach her in a big open area I know of. It will help her to not get scared when riding in the 2nd row as we go up or down something even remotely steep as she has been doing. She says No Grandpa, no. Which sounds to me like Go Grandpa Go! Seriously I have been taking it very easy with the grandkids, but they get to learn to drive and realize we are being very safe with all of them with us.

I began driving tractors and farm trucks about age 10. Got my license at 14 and want the kids to be ready for their licences when they are 16.
