Belt slapping top of housing on decel

Started doing this toward the end of Thanksgiving weekend at the dunes. It slaps so loud I thought I broke a belt coming down a dune...took my cover off to swap the belt and the belt was fine.

Just changed weights and installed new rollers (flat spotted) and it's still doing it. Not that I was expecting those changes to fix it..

Any ideas? It's slapping the top inbetween the primary and secondary. Forward of the exhaust tube. It leaves a distinct belt mark there. Only on decel and less then 20 mph.

Naw mine is a 15 and I've never had this problem before. I'm not going to put a 14 belt on even though I know you can. One, it'll screw up my clutching.

It's a brand new gates belt, I was just breaking it in..got about 20 miles on it.

Have you checked to make sure you have proper clutch spacing. If there to close the belt will slack out and cause it to hit more than normal. Proper space is 10 1/2" I also installed the slide guide. Gives a slicker surface for the belt to ride on and bolts exactly in the spot your talking about.

Yeah thought about both of those moto. Don't really want to spend $100 for a piece of plastic but...might have to. I'll barrow a friend's spacing tool, that might be it.

Darter..maybe I'm wrong, correct me if so, but if I'm set up perfect with my weights for the 15 belt won't a shorter belt throw my rpm off a bit? Not talking drastically here..

I happen to have a brand new 14' OEM belt so I can try it as an experiment I guess.

The guide so far seems to be doing its job. Got about 130 miles on the belt since install and doing good. I have pulled the cover and can see where it's still hitting the guide but it's doing what it's supposed to. I checked spacing and went to a '15 gates carbon when I put it on also did now rollers in the secondary and new hd spider. I was breaking belts about ever 70 to 85 miles. Have about 1000 miles on the car now.

On a separate note I did destroy the primary due to the primary spider backing off just before thanksgiving. Man that was expensive. Thanks again Polaris.

Could you hear it hitting before installing the guide and can you still now?

Damn 75-85mi per belt is crazy. My stock polaris belt is still in tact. 1000 hard dune miles on car, didn't blow a belt til I clutched the car and put a gates on. I think I was to light on the weights. Weights are perfect now..just gotta stop this belt slap.

Yeah I've seen pics of that. Mine isn't catching now but if I let this go it will eventually. Thanks for the heads up.

:drive1:YO DONNY ; Thanks for backin me up on the 48 belt ! Your machines have a lot of up-grades and a ton of power . I would think you have been thru it all . 2200 miles ( two years ) , stock clutch with POPO heleix up-grade , '15 cover and all stock motor . Glazed one ' 14 belt in Moab rockcrawlin ( driver error on a nasty ledge ) , ' 15 cool belt started slappin in Ocitillo Wells in the sand dunes (got hot and streched ) , still runnin my third belt ; stock ' 14 . I talked with Todd at lenth a while back and he recd the ' 14 belt without any clutch upgrades ( He's a straight shooter , didn't hard sell me on clutch kit ) . I know each driver is different in how they operate their machine and the sand tends to be a destroyer of clutches . I believe that if all is set-up properly , the plastic guide is a moot point . Just this mans opinion and oh by the way , I beat the hell out of this car ! . No trailer queen !

It's not that difficult. Easier with 2 people. You have to remove both primary and secondary clutches and you don't have to have the alignment tool but I would advise just to spend the few bucks to buy one. The center to center of the shafts should be 10.5 inches. You loosen the bolts that hold the trans to the motor and that acts as your pivot to add or subtract spacing. I'm sure someone can provide a better description. I've done it once and it wasn't that bad

Robb make sure that's not the timing chain slapping on start up.

So a little update. Pulled my cover/belt/clutches and inner cover to fix the spacing. When I did, I was beyond pissed to see my belt with only 20 break in miles on it destroyed. The top was torn right off in a 3 inch section from hitting the top. 20 miles!

So I adjusted the tranny and fixed the spacing...now I get to spend $180 on that white piece of plastic and another belt.

Kit, belts, tools, rollers, sliders, more belts, more tools...this clutch shit is never ending.

Order incoming Todd.

I know the feeling.
Clutch kit. $350
8 blown belts plus the 4 spares I currently have $65 a piece
Rollers $60
Hd spider. $35
New primary $650
Aftermarket vents for the cover $50
Slide guide $100

Little over $2000 in and I'm sure I'm still not done. And that doesn't include the 3 tools to assemble/disassemble.

Thanks Polaris.

It was about 10 and 5/8th. So 1/8 out. The tool still went on it just didn't slide on and on freely..it binded a little, like the shaft was tweaked a tiny bit. None of the bolts were loose, after I got them all loose I was able to get the tranny to a point where the tool would slide very nicely on and off with no binding. After the torque sequence it stayed pretty close and I was happy enough to call it good. Measures pretty close to 10.5 now.

I may or may not need that white slider at this point but I'm not risking it. Destroying a belt after 20 easy break in miles is absolutely ridiculous.
