Should both ends of the axle shaft up front be able to compress in and out. I bought a new one and it seems stiff to move on the outer end but free on the inner side and the inner side will compress and extend and the outer end doesnt compress or extend at all.. something might have got messed up inside i guess?? or is it normal?

Your OK. The inner axle splines are able to "plunge" in and out of the cup to accomodate suspension movements.
