Another intermittent starting problem

I've read a bunch of threads about starting problems, but am still baffled. This is an 09 stock RZR 800. I've owned it since new, and periodically when you turn the key to start it, you just get one loud click and then nothing. I've always kept trying it it seems to finally work (sometimes after I have a beer and think about it), but this is driving me nuts. It's not the battery, it starts perfectly once it decides to make the starter spin and is fully charged. It's not the brake light interlock issue, both brake lights are on and working, plus jumping them makes no difference.

I'm starting to think maybe it's something wrong with the key switch that is an intermittent fault. When you turn it on, you can hear the fuel pump prime, gauges on, and everything appears normal. It's just that when you turn it to the start position, sometimes all you get is the dreaded click. I just went through it and finally, after the click, the starter cranked -- probably ten or twelve tries (and a beer) later.

Riding this weekend in a remote area and worried about having a problem. If I take a set of jumper cables, can I jump it from the battery to the starter if need be? Where is the starter at? Used to do this all the time "back in the day" on cars, but haven't thought about it for years.

Thanks for any suggestions or help.

When it just goes CLICK! does everything else electrical stay on or does everything go off momentarily. The reason I ask is if everything goes dead like the headlights and such and then come back on by themselves that would point directly to a poor battery connection. I would start with checking all battery cables for tightness and no corrosion.

Just saying but I had a problem with my chevy 2500HD where one key turn it wouldn't even try to start, then I could turn it a few times and it would crank like new. It did this intermittently for a few month driving me crazy as it wouldn't start or even try to till you turn the key 6 or 8 times sometimes over a few minutes. Then it finally showed up, the battery was shorting out internally. It wasn't a loose wire or bad starter or bendix like I was thinking it had to be. So just saying it might be your battery after you check all your connections, maybe borrow another battery and see if it acts the same way. Good luck.

Okay, so maybe I've figured it out! I started it fifteen times in a row this morning with no problem.

It now looks to me like there is about a one second delay after turning the key to the start position before anything but that click happens. If I just keep the key turned to the start position, it will eventually start. Usually, however, I expect it to act like my cars and the starter to engage immediately on turning it to the start position, and when it doesn't happen I release the key. If I try enough times, eventually I hold it in start position long enough the starter engages, so I think it's intermittent. Apparently, however, it will start every time if I hold it in start position and just wait for the starter to engage.

Has anyone else experienced this behavior?

Sounds like mine when I had problems, except it would not eventually start. 2 things, 1. TAKE APART and clean the terminal post on the frame close to solenoid and then crank it back down TIGHT. 2. Replace the solenoid. m

Post your fix when you get it done.

You da man! Based on your message, I removed the bolt that grounds everything to the frame. It was tight and looked ok, but when I got it off, it was obvious the only actual ground was through the threads, since the frame is painted. I used steel wool on all the connections, particularly the one from the battery and the one to the starter. Then I looked at the threads on the bolt and saw what may have been a small amount of corrosion there, so I used a wire brush and cleaned the threads off.

PRESTO! The delay is gone & I'm no longer sweating bullets about it not starting. We went a hundred miles on Saturday, so there were obviously a lot of starts and never had a hesitation.

Thank you!

EDIT 10/2011. The problem is back again, so I'm going to replace the solenoid as a first step in trying to run it down. When I first started it recently after it had sat for a month (with a battery tender on it), it took over 20 tries to get it to crank. After riding it for a few days and letting it sit for a couple of days, it started first time, so I'm pretty baffled.
