Are the a arm guards just for looks or do they protect as advertised? Which brand is better as far as fit and finish EMP or Pro Armor?

when I was at 50" wide I had a arm guards and they hold a lot of mud, if you ride mud I wouldn't suggest them, seems like they would tear more cv boots then without them. if you just ride trail then I would say get em to stop stick and what not from tearing the boot

I have EMP aluminum ones on my 800 and I was really surprised how beat up they were when I took them off to install the Super Dave bushings. The front ones were pretty badly dented on the leading edge and the rear ones were badly knicked up from rocks thrown up from the front tires. I ride mostly desert and mountain trails, not much mud. I ordered HWM plastic ones from Polaris for my new 900S and would not be without them after seeing how beat up they were on my 800. I am going to try the plastic ones because the slide better and do not dent or gouge line the metal ones.

Gotta agree (wish they made them for arched arms somehow). I'm not a fan of aluminum guards. They are noisy, grab onto rocks and don't slide, and dent/tear which can reduce their effectiveness for the next time. UHMW (like futv uses) on the other hand is just the opposite...slides over rocks, doesn't dent or tear, and doesn't seem to ever wear out. I have heard claims of people tearing through UHMW skids but have yet to see one yet...not saying it can't happen, but I haven't seen it
