2nd Dune trip with XP

So we got the xp out to Glamis again to take advantage of the great sand and weather (an lack of crowds). Our first ride was out to China Wall....boy was it soft and fun! We got out there about noon Saturday and there were about 6 quads there. With in five minutes about 5 more groups of quads, rails, and/or rzr's got there.

The XP climbed China with ease....if my back wasn't bothering me so much I would have tried to hammer through the whoops and see if I could climb it faster, but I rolled through them and hammered the skinny pedal and climbed it no problem. My friend then hopped it and side hilled China a few times and then took my wife up it. I was pretty shocked that the stock XP climbed China with 2 people in it. This thing is truly awesome! By that time 2 more XP's got there and they were the only SxS's even playing on the hill. At one point my buddy in mine and someone else in the XP criss crossed side hilling about 3/4's of the way up...was pretty fun to watch.

Here's a video of a side hill of China, still processing the climb videos of it climbing straight up....(sorry for the crappy cell video)

I also went through and checked the filters etc - oil was good but the intake (much to my chagrin) had sand in it. We had about 100 miles on the clock when I checked the air filter and intake...not as bad as the old style but not as good as I had hoped! The breather elements were both pretty nasty and I gave them a good soaking. Someone should come up with new elements that let less sand through!

We went over to the drags Saturday afternoon and I raced a turbo'd rzr (one time) and took him by about a car length. The rev limiter may have been keeping him from staying side by side with me. After that I took a few runs and topped out at about 70mph. I raced two yfz 450's a few times and pulled them both once, otherwise we were all about neck and neck with them getting a better jump on me a few times and winning.

There were some fast turbo'd rzrs out there. One must have had a turbo'd big bore or something because he was beating all the XP's, other turbo rzrs and poor old commanders! :rofl3:

I still need to get the rear end dialed a little better as it seemed pretty hoppy through a lot of the whoops. My back can't handle hammering through them at speed to see if the suspension is capable at handling that terrain at that speed....but all in all its keeping me smiling the whole time. We were in the big bowls on the way to the drags and for the first time ever back there I had to use the brakes because I was carrying too much speed....go figure!

I'm still amazed at how this thing does stock! Here are a few pics, we spent more time riding than shooting pics!

Is that sand getting past the filter? If so that engine will be toast in no time!

The butterflys looked fine, I hit them with mass air cleaner to be sure and used the little vacuum we have in the camper to suck the rest of the crap out of the air box. That sand however was sitting at the bottom of where the filter should be, but yes, seems sand is getting passed the filter which had me a little worried. At least in the old air box it would sit in the bottom and not get passed the filter. Yikes!

I see your bottom air box clips are not hooked in.
Were they hooked in because I know they are a b!tch to hook in if you pull it apart.
I think you are to only remove the 4 screws and then tilt the lid open just enough to remove the filter.

Yeah all of the clips are undone and the hinges at the bottom are a bitch. Ultimately I separated them to clean out the intake but at first I pulled it apart just enough to take the filter out. I've got to check the connections/clamps etc to see where its coming from. A little troubling!!!

I dont have to worry about sand up here haha.

I'm not 100% sure, it seemed like it was on right when I took it off, however that much sand had me freaking out. It went back on right, that's for sure!

Once I check all of the clamps, etc and grease all of the filter edges, etc I'll post up a status update.

Very curious to see if others have better results.

That is alot of sand. I have a rzr s and every day I clean the filter and put a new bead of grease around the lid to help seal. Also I started sprayin the inside of the filter housing with some foam oil. It helps collect some of the sand that will swirl around in there. Before it gets sucked in. I did notice a difference that there is little to no more Sand in the throttle body compared to before. Just my 2 cents

Agreed. Lesson learned for sure! I'm glad I did check it and didn't just trust the new design. I'm encouraged by Franks picture that it must have been on wrong or a clamp is loose or something, because that's just crazy!

I'll double check everything and test it again out at G this weekend and see how it turns out. Fingers are crossed!

I am going to put some form of outerwear upstream of the filter like I did on my standard. I may keep my DFR/BTI in case I have to graft that onto the car. NEVER had a dust/dirt ingestion problem with that unit.
