Looking for feedback on the under the fender S&B fan damage. My first fan lasted about 500 miles and then started making noise and took it off and found the whole housing and blades cracked out. S&B was great to deal with, sent me a new fan without hassle. I installed the new fan and went on 2 smaller rides (less than 50 miles combined) and this fan stopped spinning. I took it out and the motor went out and I found fan blade damage again.

Working with S&B currently, they don't cover blade damage but are having me do some tests and if the motor is out they cover that (it seems).

Is this amount of blade damage normal? What can be done to avoid it? Also, has anyone just unlugged the fan and ran without it. I know doing this defeats the purpose of the separator but what are the long term effects (if any) of just not replacing the fan and leaving it off if this is going to keep happening?

I can't imagine sand/dust causing that. Seems like it's getting pebbles/small rocks in there...
I believe this is correct. Since writing this post S&B has reached out to me and stated they are making a sealed V2 version for fender mount which has mesh over the opening instead of the open cut aways on the V1. Customer service didn't mention this upgrade at all until I emailed them on the same warranty ticket/chain and they changed my ticket from a warranty claim to an upgrade claim.

One question remains, is if there is any harm in continuing to drive with no working scavenge fan until the V2 is shipped. I would think not other than it wont filter as good?

I also did a forum search and found partial answers and the upgrade thread.

Without the fan working the particle separator will not perform well. Other than your air filter will get dirtier quicker I see no harm using it without the fan.

I worked with S&B for about 10 months trying to get my under fender ps for my 21 Pro XP to work as advertized. S&B finally

I was finally able to get them to address the function without the fan. It doesn’t cause an issue other than the filter will get dirty quicker.
I put in the preorder for the V2 version and I’ll try that out and see if it’s a long term difference

Looks like the rest of your message got cut off. What was the end result? It seems people have had a lot of mixed results with the first version, but they all say that S&B has been responsive in trying to address the issues. Curious what your experience was.

Sorry about that post being cut off. My Samsung phone does not work with the editor here.

The first version fails at removing dust when riding in dusty conditions here in southwest Arizona. S&B tried all their fixes and replaced the unit with a new one. They could not make it work. After about eight months they reluctantly offered me a refund and I was told by the S&B CEO not to talk about this again to anyone. That really passed me off. S&B would never admit there are problems with the first version.

With the refund I purchased their rollbar unit. That unit works as advertised. I highly recommend the rollbar unit over the original version of the under fender unit. Time will tell if the new version is an improvement.

This is just one of my many posts of problems with the under fender unit and results of the rollbar unit I replaced it with. This post was just a few months ago in January. And now in late February they announce a new version of the under fender unit. I still have the complete under fender unit, but I have no plans of taking their offer on a free upgrade to version 2.

Makes perfect sense and I dont blame you. I dont know how mine keeps eating fans. The only thing I could think of is the V1 has the cut outs that can let larger debris in but that debris would still have to pass through the vortex's which doesn't make sense to me. The only other thing I can think of is debris is getting kicked up from the tires and traveling into the dust ejection port, this makes more sense but I am not sure. I don't have any complaints about the dust separation, in the 600 miles I've used it my filter and air box is nearly spotless. Im going to give the V2 a try. I might put a screen over the ejection port.

What direction is the exhaust port pointing? My port pointed directly to the upper portion of the shock.

My neighbor also has the under fender unit. He had fan issues too. His issue was the sticker on the fan blade came loose and jammed the fan.

I'm really suspicious that version 2 will improve anything.

My fan points in the same orientation, directly facing the shock. I went back and looked at my pics and all my fan damage (the first and second fans) is to the outer blades, which does indicate debris is getting kicked up and going into the ejection port rather than debris passing through the unit. Understanding this and kowing the ejection port is in the same location and orientation on the V2, I dont think the V2 will solve my issue if this is correct and what is happening.

I will still do the upgrade because I need a new fan anyway and that was the easier way to get it. I will start looking at ways to screen the ejection port off now in hopes that mod takes care of it.

Could just be the fan blade assembly. They can become loose on the motor assembly. when you inspect it see if there is any up and down play. If so is it contacting another part of the main housing.

Regards,
That is what customer service thought but both had no in and out or axial play, just the front (outward facing) fan blade damage. They did seem to imply this is isolated and I was the only one seeing this. They didn't really address why it is happening. Something to note for others, if you want fan warranty the motor has to go out, blade damage is not covered but it the motor stops spinning or it is electrical that is covered. To claim warranty you have to run through the connection test sequence and report results.

Has anyone added some mesh to cover the three intake ports and fan exhaust outlet? I was thinking of gluing some Frogzskin mesh on mine but not sure how I should attach it. This black RTV silicone should work. I have the particle seperator all torn apart right now to replace the seal with the updated part. I saw Frogzskin sells mesh in sheets for a DIY project. I don't want to take it all apart later in the season to add another updated part again.

It's a particle separator, I would be concerned that on the inlet side you would just be adding more restriction. As for the ejector fan which is intended to remove much of the dust and larger particles, it would also be restrictive and fill up with dirt that would otherwise be ejected.

Regards,
If the factory air filter uses Frogzskin it must have enough airflow through the mesh. If a particle is small enough to make it through the mesh then it should be able to expel it out the mesh. I guess it could get clogged up. Maybe use some Home Depot screen with larger opening for the outlet fan?

I'm just trying to keep big items out of the filter box and particle separator assembly. That was my reasoning for the mesh on the intake side. Exit side was not even on my radar till I saw this post, but it makes sense that debris from the tires could damage the fan.

I was looking at doing that before I saw the V2 version. I’m taking the free upgrade and seeing what the new part looks like and then will work future mods based on that.
Just to clarify, is the v2 you're talking about a replacement under the fender type setup or is it the one on the website that can be mounted behind the rear seats?

Please post a picture of your v2 unit when it arrives. Thanks for sharing
I will, it is basically identical except it is a 1 piece install and built at the factory since so many people had issues with the V1 seal and instead of cut outs it has a screened intake.

Here is the YT link:
