Well my utv invasion trip was a bust, my 230 mile xpt quit starting after one trip into the dunes. Starter spins but wouldn't engage, so I decided to remove the stator cover and found the problem. I found three short allen bolts wedged between the starter gear and flywheel. Which must be the sprag bolts. I couldn't believe it, nobody I talked to had seen this before on a turbo. Hopefully Polaris takes care of it.

Just getting back from vacation so haven't checked the forums in a few days.

I see you saw my post about pulling starting my friends rzr. I'm thinking he has the same issue as you. He's is currently at the dealer getting the situation addressed.

He also has a 17 XP4. We have another 17 turbo in our group (2 seater) without issues. I also have a 16 turbo (2 seater) with over 2k miles without a problem.

So is this a XP4 known issue or a 17 turbo known issue?

I was at the dunes Gordons well first ride thought my Belt was going out stopped from a weird noise.. turns out its same thing. Missing a bolt head too. Really disappointed almost didnt get out of there was very scary for my family. My 17 xpt4 has about 900 miles. Whats going on polaris? Are these bolts just too short? Lots and lots of this happening too 17 xpt machines wonder if any 2018s or 2019s

Just got back from the dealer to pick my machine up. Checked on my buddies that had the starter issue.

The same 3 bolts fell out of the starter. Polaris is going to warranty everything. The Polaris tech said its from trying to start the rzr while it's running which I don't believe for a second. I think there should have been locktite on those bolts and someone forgot about it.

Well FACK!!! Mine just went to the dealer yesterday....one of the bolts behind the clutch on my XPT went bouncing around my clutches, gouging them up, and blasted a hole in the aluminum clutch cover.
I haven't gotten that dreaded call from the dealer yet about backordered parts...but i'm not looking forward to it. :sad

90 miles and 4 hours on my 3 day old machine then it wouldn't start. Turns out it sheared off the fly wheel bolts or they were loose either way I had the same issue some of you are seeing. Dealer is going to order parts Monday hopefully they replace everything with new and it doesn't cause problems down the road.

So this seems to be a major issue for the 2017 turbos similar to how the 2016 turbos had the three bolts behind the primary clutch falling out. I just had mine fixed under warranty and it would have been a $1300 bill if I didn’t have a warranty.
I’m not sure how involved it would be for everyone to start pulling that cover off and what ever else has to come off to check the 3 bolts behind the fly wheel that are backing out and breaking off. But if someone more mechanically inclined wanted to do a write-up on it it would probably save a lot of people a lot of time and money of being broke down without a starter.

All you should have to do is remove flywheel/stator cover, then with a flywheel puller take out flywheel. That should expose those bolts. Don't get me wrong, I have not done this to a rzr, so maybe a little more to it, but I have removed plenty of flywheels in my day and they all are basically the same as far as motorcycle type engines go. So yeah def no splitting the case, if that were true that invoice for labor would be MUCH higher.
