I'm going to order the Factory UTV UHMW A-arm/CV Guards and skid plates but I'm up in the air on whether to get the 3/8 or 1/2 inch. Does anyone know the weight difference between the two and I'd like some input from you real world experienced folks regarding the skid thickness needed. I haven't seen any posts about someone tearing up a 3/8 inch UHMW skid which has me leaning towards the thinner one.

I think they'll both hold up well. I went with their 1/2" offering simply because all of my riding is trail and rocks. I am pulling the plate to clean out the dirt this weekend, and will be happy to post photos of the scars it shows. To be clear, though, none have even come close to breaking/cracking/etc. it.

I run another brands 3/8" and have beat the snot out of it and it looks great still. Not sure what it would take to destroy one but its gotta be pretty bad.

I made my skid plate out of a sheet of 3/8 UHMW and have about 1000 miles with it on. It is all scarred up and has taken a beating from rocks. Holds up very well. This is from both desert riding and mountain trail riding. I have hits some rocks hard with no damage except deep scratches in the plate but does not hurt the plate

3/8 will work great so why have the extra weight of 1/2? Of course some will say you must have 1/2 for real protection but that is an overkill.

Just as everyone else has stated in this thread: I have beaten the hell out of my 3/8" FUTV skids and they keep on asking for more. I have had several high speed rock impact hits as well as countless lower speed bashings and the skids are doing their job. 1/2" would only be adding extra weight IMO.

I went with the 1/2 inch on mine and it is awesome. when you come up on a sharp rock you dont have to try to find a way around it you just let it slide right down the middle and you expect it to cut the skid plate like a knife but when you check it out there isnt even a mark on it. It is great peace of mind. the 3/8 is only 25% lighter than the 1/2. I never weighed mine before I put it on but the 1/2 was pretty light. I think your talking the weight savings of another case of beers in the back. haha.

Extra case of beer or 1/2 inch skid, this is the most compelling argument thus far for the 3/8 inch skid. :xboit5:

I've made two trips to Ouray Co. and the rocks are brutal! I had to baby my baby through some parts of these trails. Some rocks just can't be avoided and I couldn't hep but think about the UHMW at every obstacle. I need one of these UHMW skids in a bad way.

I see them on eBay for $260.00 with free shipping. Is that a good price for the 3/8?

Assuming the fit is good, yes. Make sure the mounting bolts are recessed as well...

forum members pay $349 +shipping for our skids. Our skids work with nerf bars, bumpers and retain one piece structural integrity on the main skid. The ebay skids won't do any of those things. We also throw in a UHMW Fuel Tank guard setup at that price and we back that deal with industry best customer service and support. Good luck on ebay if you have an issue...

another vote forthe 3/8ths skid from futv. i have beat mine pretty hard (all of our riding is rock crawling) and it has held up great. so good that i just ordered the matching a-arm guards. i think 1/2 thick uhmw skids are necessary for full-size rock crawlers (jeeps/buggies/etc) but the rzr is really heavy enough to warrant it. 3/8ths is plenty

The mounting holes are recessed. The brand name is listed as Tusk. I think that's what rocky-mountain ATV sells for $299.

I'll go 3/8, but didn't consider the possible compatibility issues with other aftermarket parts like bumpers and nerfs. (Hmmm) While I agree that the one-piece is the better choice, the budget dictates what is practical.

Tusk did to us what they've done to a hundred other American fab shops that design good American made parts. Copy a good idea and send it to China and have it mass produced. I've bought a few Tusk doo dads from Rocky Mountain in the past because they were cheap and found them to be exactly what I paid for...cheap junk. I equate buying their skids to buying a cheap Chinese RZR knockoff as opposed to a real RZR.
