white smokes usaully a sign of burning antifreeze, blown head gasket, cracked head, ect..
like you said pull the belt cover, check for rotation first.

never did a big bore, but built MANY rzr and ranger 800's engines. be'n a push rod engine, there very simple. no timing chains to deal with, just dots on gears to match up.....
but there head torqueing sequance is kinda weird.
