Question Crossover Ring Removal?

I have a '16 2 seat turbo with the Shock Therapy stage 4 work done to the shocks. I do not have their sway bars.

I get so much rattling from the springs banging on the crossover rings I am thinking of removing them. I would like to know if anyone has done this and what the downside would be.
I ride mostly dunes and am not a racer/jumper but do some spirited duning.

Thoughts?

Scott

Re: Crossover Ring Removal?

Before you do that, try adjusting the crossover rings up higher on the body. This should allow the top softer spring to work through the short chop better before engaging the crossover. You may feel a bit more body roll while cornering, but banging should go away. A lot of old desert racers with quality spring will back the rings way off and let the spring do all the work.

Mark

Re: Crossover Ring Removal?

The effect would be removing the true dual rate tunable spring system.
The upper spring lower rate spring would have to bind before the lower higher rate spring would come into play for less % of full shock stroke. The crossover gets the lower springs higher rate involved sooner. Without the ring you may find the car bottoming out or needing more compression added for having less higher spring rate in the shock stroke.
Maybe someone will know if binding the spring will aid in it being worn out sooner or failure.

Re: Crossover Ring Removal?

Your right, It would not be adjustable, but would still be considered dual rate, as long as the upper spring is not a collapsed keeper/fluffer like they use stock.

Re: Crossover Ring Removal?

clock your springs so they don't hit as much. If they rub the crossover ring that much, they would probably rub the shock body if you removed them

You mean lower on the body? Allowing the softer upper spring to have more stroke before being blocked by the crossover ring and making the noise.

Crossover Ring Removal?

The lower you put it the more main spring it will use

Re: Crossover Ring Removal?

The lower, or closer to the spring separator at ride height will engage the stiffer lower spring quicker. If you have the crossover 1" from the separator at ride height loaded, the softer spring will only travel that far before crossing over into the stiffer spring.

Re: Crossover Ring Removal?

You could also try different crossovers from zbroz. They are a lot smaller than shock therapy so they wont hit the spring near as much.

Re: Crossover Ring Removal?

ST has two style rings.
The 3 bolt rings are larger with the 2 bolt close to the same size as Zbros or even smaller.

Re: Crossover Ring Removal?

Thank you for all of the replies!

I have been a bit off the grid so I was not able to read them til this morning.

I have talked with ST about the irritating noise a few times. They had me check spring clocking and I have messed with that a bit to no avail. This is why I thought I would ask the collective about removing them.
I don't want the spring to bang on the shock body either. There is a good possibility of this given how loud the shock rattle noise is. Would be nice if there was a polyurethane sleeve or bumper to help.

I will try adjusting the crossover rings up higher on the body. Any idea how much might be effective?

Thanks again for the input everyone.

Scott
