What Kind of Wheel Bearing Mileage..

How many miles are you all getting out of your wheel bearings? My XPT has 1400 miles on it and I think I need to replace my bearings? This is my most dreaded maintenance service Although, I'm actually impressed they have lasted this long, I had changed my 900XP's wheel bearings two maybe three times by the time i had this mileage.

Also, have any of you had better luck with aftermarket wheel bearings vs the stock Polaris bearings?

Mine has just over 2k hard miles with stock tires. I grease them regularly now and they are still good. Buy the greasing tool and grease them every now and then.

Re: What Kind of Wheel Bearing Mileage..

I had 5200 miles on my stock wheel bearings before they started getting sloppy. If you don't drive in mud and water they will last a long time. I bought the UTV Inc greasing tool and greased the new ones so I am hoping they last well over 6000 miles this go around.

I will also say, do you yourself a favor when you replace them and buy the factory bearings. I ordered cheap ones on Amazon from Iconic Racing and 3 of the 4 had play after the first ride. I got to change them twice in two hundred miles! lol

Re: What Kind of Wheel Bearing Mileage..

My '16 Turbo is around 2,200-2,300 miles and the front wheel bearing is getting sloppy and will be replaced soon. Probably 1,800+ miles of the total are in dunes on sand tires (28" STU - razors up front, #1 cut paddles rear), the rest are in dirt split between the stock tires and now 32x10-14" Mongrels.

Re: What Kind of Wheel Bearing Mileage..

How much slop do you guys have when you replace the bearings? Must be different for everyone since it is by feel or do you hear noise in the bearing also.

Re: What Kind of Wheel Bearing Mileage..

I ride in WV only so mud/water is common and I'm not a mud seeker but in WV it's inevitable. Also, our terrain is very rugged where I ride so I'm sure that doesn't help. I measure the slop when RZR is jacked up w/wheels off the ground, grab top of tire with two hands and pull/push to feel how much play is in the wheel. When bearings are new there is no play at all. You can ride a long time with a certain amount of play but if your wheel bearings fail it could be a long walk out of the woods. My 900XP ate wheel bearings, I had 3300 miles when I sold it and I changed all four wheel bearing 4-5 times, it sucks! But other than wheel bearings and ball joints, I've not had any mechanical problems with my two RZRs!

Same here: jack up and check for play trying to push the top of the tire in 'n out. It's useful to be looking at the full suspension (a 2nd set of eyes helps) when you do it, to ensure any play that your find is not from sloppy bushings, balljoints or tie rods vs. wheel bearings. Obviously, tie rods shouldn't give you play if pushing/pulling at the top/bottom, but they will if you push/pull at the front/back.

I don't have a measurement I go for, but it's just a feel thing I guess. As mentioned, brand new they're good and tight: no play. They quickly loosen up to have a very, very, very tiny amount of play in them, barely perceptible. Once it becomes "obvious" play (like my right front on the Turbo now) it's time to order parts and get ready to replace. You can still ride on it with a little play (maybe 1/16" or less of movement at the top of the tire) and I just did that on my Idaho trip. It didn't honestly seem to loosen up any more, but I'm replacing them soon ASAP. If it's like really obvious, more than 1/16" or movement in the wheel I'd say it's now "necessary" to replace.

Of course, that's 100% just my $0.02, not based on any manual or data.

Re: What Kind of Wheel Bearing Mileage..

I get probably about 700 miles average. i grease them when I install them, but don't re-grease like I should. Seems every ride I end up in about a foot of water creek crossings and what not.

Bearings are easy though - the most dreaded job for me so far has been taking out that damn front driveshaft for service lol That guard really is a pita
