The bigger issue is that it says "GATES" on it.

My personal experience with Gates belts is that they are all "Test" belts.

I have the gates and it does not say test. Also, why the hate?? I have a gates on since day two and the engagement is MUCH more smooth. I have over 500 miles on her now, only smoked it once.

Re: Gates belt, has anyone seen this?

I am super happy that you are enjoying the gates belt. After doing a lot of research and reading a bunch of Happy experiences, I decided to pick up a couple of gates carbon belts for my machine. After I blew an oem belt that had a lot of miles on it, I threw in one of the gates belts. I was taking it very easy but still blew it within two days. I had another one and threw that on and blew it within the next 2 days. I put an oem back on and it lasted until I sold the machine the next year. The great thing about Gates belts is when they blow they just blow into chunks. Super easy to clean up and you don't have to worry about threads wrapping around your primary and ruining your seal. But I simply do not trust Gates belts anymore, hence my previous comment.

Wow that is really something. Not unheard of though, you have to stick with what works.
Part of me was apprehensive about running the stock belt knowing the cords could take out the transmission shaft seal, but I still carry that and a hunterworks as backup. One of these days I’ll run it as I’ve got the Razorback gauge now.

Re: Gates belt, has anyone seen this?

get the crank seal saver and don't worry about hurting the seal.
I ran gates successfully on my xp900 but they don't hold up on the xp1000. They chunk out pretty quickly. Popo belts hold up well.

That’s right, I read about these savers. I have the turbo, so I can’t comment, but I’ve had excellent luck with my gates belt - for any future readers. This is a very subjective opinion.

Re: Gates belt, has anyone seen this?

hahaha. Like many things, when the Gates belts came out, they were the greatest thing ever. Years later they are junk according to many? If the belt is chunking out, you need to learn how to manage the throttle going over whoops and jumps? The biggest issues with the Gates is the wear on the clutch sheaves and the thicker belt can be a problem if you run high speeds often. If you are into dune and desert riding where you will be in High gear and going fast a lot, might want to stick with OEM or give the Hunterworks a try? Call gates and ask them why it says "Test"? They are pretty easy to deal with.

Re: Gates belt, has anyone seen this?

it says test because its a test belt. they build these test belts in batches, and send them to trusted dealers and racers mostly. i have never seen one in the hands of a general public user, some of their test belts only get delivered after signing an NDA. these only go to people they trust. I can only assume this belt you see, is on a machine that might have been bought used or belongs to someone who has close ties to gates R&D because they dont give those belts away. They keep up with them, know where they send them, and if they send more than one to someone they want that person to report back where they all went. Furthermore they want them back after you test them. I suspect this belt isnt just running out in a jimmy joe bobs trail rig, but who knows.

Re: Gates belt, has anyone seen this?

^^^ X2.
Its either a BIG oopsie in shipping (been there), or the previous owner could have been doing some R&D on a prototype. If it looks good, I'd run it. Who knows?! You may have the new "best belt in the biz," and we don't even know about it yet.
