Primary Clutch Won't Pop Off

Hi,
I sent an email to @Hunterworks from where I bought my primary clutch puller, but they are closed for the weekend. So in the interest of time, I thought I would reach out to you all. The OEM bolt came right out, but the primary clutch itself doesn't want to break free using Todd's puller and my impact wrench. I did try some light taps on the end of the puller as is suggested in one of Todd's videos. But maybe I'm being too gentle as I don't want to damage something. I could put some Kroil in there or spray Liquid Wrench in. Thoughts, tricks, advice?
Thanks,
Jay

Re: Primary Clutch Won't Pop Off

Use a hammer with some weight to it. You want to jar it not tease it. Old say, if it doesn't work get a bigger hammer. Some times the weight is what is needed to jar it loose. Have a 3# sledge I have used over the years that has saved a lot of problems a lighter hammer will not touch. Again, jar it don't try to destroy it. Sometimes a rubber hammer on the rim on all side can help. Be very careful with light taps. You what to jiggle it from side to side just a bit. Use caution on all of this. Tap the end of the puller bolt a good solid tap. Is your impact up to the job of loading the puller bolt? Good luck.

That's a good question. I have 115 lbs of pressure, but my tank is so small it can only deliver that for about 5 seconds before the compressor comes on. Maybe I have to break down and buy one of those Milwaukee units like Todd uses.
In the meantime I have changed out the square pucks for rollers on the secondary.

Electric impacts are totally awesome. You will appreciate it a great deal. Take my along for changing trailer tires if needed. It is a good investment. I like the DeWalt, Milwaukee are great as well.

Re: Primary Clutch Won't Pop Off

The primary bolt is torqued in 2 sequences, I canít remember the initial torque to seat the primary on the crank stub, but the second torque is 96 ft lbs. I think your impact is just too weak, 115 ft lbs isnít much from an impact.

Re: Primary Clutch Won't Pop Off

Have you continued to tighten it and hit it, tighten it, hit it, tighten it, hit it?
I did this a few times and about the 3rd time it came off.

But I was using the rod that goes thru the end of the puller, no impact guns
I did have to lodge a piece of wood very carefully under the primary go it couldn't spin backwards
Polaris needs a primary clutch holder tool like skidoo has...

Yes, several times now. I am going to borrow a friend's cordless impact wrench tomorrow and see if that doesn't do the trick.
Thanks,
Jay

Re: Primary Clutch Won't Pop Off

bigger impact and bigger swings with hammer

There are several electric impacts and I use Milwaukee, I have two one is 450lbs and one is 1500, I would not be using the 1500, I use it to remove bolts not put them on.

Keep the threads on the puller oiled too, it helps to not have the resistance in the threads hold you back too. Not to mention saves them from getting worn out/galled up.

Re: Primary Clutch Won't Pop Off

Thought I should close out this thread. The primary clutch came right off with a better impact wrench. Hunterworks white washer now in place.
